    As of Wensday morning

the solar decath team in first place? Why the U of Maryland of course. Followed closly by the U of Georgia. One of MD's interesting items was a decorative waterfall in the Living Room. Kind of a decorative zen type decoration. Only instead of water it was circulating a Calcium Chloride solution that looked like water. It absorbed moisture out of the air and then ran it through some heated tanks outside where the water would be removed. This would help dehumidify the air in the home, and help the A/C out. • that is very good news!

Lois & I visited the SD in DC on Saturday and Sunday. Saturday was like being in a sardine can - all day long. They said they expected a total of 100,000 visitors for the show's run. Looked to me like all 100,000 showed up on Sat(G).

Gary Hayden & wife Jo are headed there later this week to be guides for the event.

    True that!

I went Sat morning at 10 AM. By 11 it was starting to get crowed by 12, it was so crowded I left. (That reminds me of an old Yogi Beraism where he said, "Nodody goes to THAT restaurant. It's always too crowded." badabing!) This Sat coming is the last day. Friday is the end of the competition. With the Orioles doing poorly for 15 years and the Redskins still a ways away from success, all I got to brag on these days is the U of MD Decathalon Team. Fear the Turtle :) WW

  • no matter the standings

evoking the name of Mark Eatherton grants one supreme status amoung the students of Colorado who are working the show - a reverence, if you will, for a trusted mentor and advisor.

    Like having a gold card!

Much to come before it is done.
  • I'm humbled...

And very proud of the bright minds of the future that were involved here. Truth be known, the hydronic curtain was actually their idea. They originally wanted to go with PEX, which I obliged them with, along with recommendations that they MIGHT want to consider using copper instead of the unruly, highly expansive PEX.

They tried, and ended up agreeing with me and used copper.

If you don't try, you'll never know... It's been a great learning experience for EVERYONE, including myself and my partner Tom.

Thanks for the kudos Dave. Wish I could have been there with you.

  • That

would be really cool to waltz in the Colorado door with ME. BTW, ran into Jeff Lyng in the middle of the show (the previous team leader for Colorado in 05). Had a very nice chat & he remembered my seeking him out per your recommendation.

Maybe in two years, we can plan for a Wallie herd to visit the show.

That's two Wallies missed from our weekend's journey through the Solar Decathlon! Gives you an idea of how crowded it was. I was blown away by the University of Maryland's outstanding exhibit because, as Dan Foley can tell you, just a few weeks ago, it looked like they might not be able to pull it together in time for the show. The pierced under-floor tubing had really thrown a monkey-wrench into their schedule and delayed progress for weeks. Must have been some all-nighters pulled(G)!

Having been slightly involved in helping them for a day made the visit much more personal.

    radio coverage

Public Radio will have a story today (All Things Considered). This hour, actually (I write at 4 PM EST).

By the way, good article in Fine Homebuilding - yeah, I know, a different thread, but here I am.

    Peace

    Ach !

The Germans took the prize for first place. Sorry I didn't see their house. It was closed when I was there the first day. U of MD hung onto 2nd place and U of Colorado snuck up to 5th. I wish I had more time to look some more. Tomorrow's the last day, but I'll be out of town. Congrats to the Germans. I wonder how much it cost to bring the house over from the Father land??? WW

crashed their private party Sat early eve (side door was open) & were able to visit/talk with them for about an hour. They were getting ready to leave for a party at the German Embassy. I was especially interested in the louvered solar panels & had an opportunity to talk directly with the guy who designed and built them. As Schultzie would say: velly interestink!
  • Everyone wins...

Congratulations to all who participated. I for one am proud to say I know some other people who donated time and materials to make it all happen.

Thanks to al of you for stepping up to the pump.

    See you in 2009 ?

  • Who

I wonder??? I'd love to know who among us participated.

Dan Foley & his crew of Indestructable Super Heroes - U of MD (I chimed in for a very minor bit part.)

    ME - U of Colorado

Do I recall correctly that Brad White was a technical advisor?

  • we assisted U. Texas (not A and M) on their hydronic system design.

a number of different teams as the worked the aisles at various trade shows. They attended AHR, Homebuilders and REX among others looking for ideas and product.

    hot rod
