Most hardware stores carry a thin brush that will fit inside the glass. If that doesn't clean it soak it in CLR for a couple of hours.

May sight glasses be cleaned with a solution that will eat the rust & calcium, or should it just be replaced?

Cleaning Sight glass
I cut a small piece of "Brillo pad" cleaning cloth, for cleaning copper fittings, wrap it around the rod that protects the sight glass and shove it back and forth through the tube while under water at the sink. Works well0 -

You might have
to buy new packings or O-rings, too.0 -
Steam cleaning
When the boiler is producing steam , close the bottom gage glass valve and open the little drain on the bottom of it . The steam should clean the inside of the glass pretty quick .0 -
I had a really dirty one today, and just for the halibut, I tried Vanisol...the high acidic toilet bowl cleaner...worked in seconds with no scrubbing. My supplier calls it 'teeth whitener'...makes me cringe!
