Rode the Western Maryland steam train in Cumberland on the weekend. Coal fired locomotive. Coal to air ratio off a bit maybe? Fun ride, great views.

I went to Steamtown this summer where just one of those things firing was enough to choke the life out of you. I can't imagine how they managed to live like that. maybe that's why they didn't live so long back then.

Not from here. Both my boys and daughter in law and granddaughter live here so I split my time between MD and ME. 650 miles, 12.5 hours one way.

They over-fired it

probably because someone was taking pictures..... what you're seeing is unburned fuel. They would have never wasted coal like that in the old days.
