Rode the Western Maryland steam train in Cumberland on the weekend. Coal fired locomotive. Coal to air ratio off a bit maybe? Fun ride, great views.

I went to Steamtown this summer where just one of those things firing was enough to choke the life out of you. I can't imagine how they managed to live like that. maybe that's why they didn't live so long back then.0 -

They over-fired it
probably because someone was taking pictures..... what you're seeing is unburned fuel. They would have never wasted coal like that in the old days.
