Gurgling Boiler

180 is probably where the high limit is set. Your boiler shouldn't be getting that high. Why isn't it shutting down at the low limit of probably 160?

    Burnham Boiler gurgling

I have a Burnham Boiler ther gurgles for a couple minutes after the boiler shuts down. Seems like air trapped in somewhere within the boiler (not in the lines) Ive tried draining the boiler and letting it refill. You can hear the air excaping from the vent as it fills, but the gurgle remains. Suggestions on how to get that air out?

If possible, install an air vent into one of the tappings at the top of the boiler, in addition to the one found at the air purger.

    gurgling

We have seen some boilers do this. It sounds like someone is tapping on the casting with a hammer. It's happening while the boiler is running but you can really hear it after the burner stops for about 30 seconds. We don't know if it is sediment trapped in the boiler, sand pits in the casting, who knows? We have had some luck treating the water with Corex. Would love to know the why.

It could be that the boiler is overfired; wrong sized nozzle. This would superheat the area closest to the flame before the heat could dissipate to more distant areas. It could also be the reason the temp is shooting up to 180. Do you happen to know the firing rate of the nozzle and how it compares to what should be in there?

If you provide the model information, someone can check in the nozzle guide.

    Temps

My boiler is a burnham V15A-1 with a Firing rate of 1.35gph

I turned down the temp on the bolier from 180 to 160, no gurgling. What was happening is the boiler would shut down at 180, but if you watched for a couple minutes the temp would contiue to rise another 20 degrees, thats when the gurgling would happen

I now have the High Limit temp set to 160, boiler shuts down at 160 but temp continues to rise to 180. Is this 20 degree increase in temp after the boiler shuts down normal?

Dean, there is no listing of a Burnham V-1 boiler in my 1994 or 2004 Beckett books.
