That end-of-return spot looks tempting. More room. Just remove the reducer and add the vent Steamhead recommends.

Old Plugs and new Vents
I have a one pipe steam system with a dry return. As it is there is a main vent at the end of the dry return that is a ventrite #3 in a 1/4" tapping. I would like to get a better size vent in and would rather have it at the end of the main and not at the end of the return.
Near the end of the main there is a T with a 3/4" plug in it. I attached pictures of the top and also from below. I'd like to unscrew the plug and put in a nipple to a vent. How do I get the plug out? wrench, drill, cut, torch ... Space is limited.
I'd have to do the same wrenching around to remove the 1/4" tapping at the end of return location anyway. So might as well do that work where its most useful.

rusted parts
I would soak it with PB Blaster a few days ahead then use a 6-point socket and breaker bar if at all possible.0 -
