The steam system

appears to have originally been a 2-pipe air-vent system- we found some old vents on some of the rads- and was upgraded with Webster equipment later, possibly in the 1920s. Most of the radiation is pipe coils, though there are some American Rococo rads held together with rods- this dates them to the late 1800s to very early 1900s.

Originally there was a central boiler building which generated electricity and furnished steam for heating, but this was demolished in the 1950s and the prison then took its steam from the district system, and got its power from the electric utility.

The steam superseded a hypocaust system that directed heat from stoves in the basement under the floors of the cells. Unfortunately, we couldn't get to the basement.

As far as we can tell, the system should be restorable.....
