Steam pipe insulation

After asbestos removal in my basement, I have 3 large mains and and trunk pipes that need to be re-insulated. I intend to use the split fiberglass type in 1" thickness. The contractor doing this says that due to the number of elbows and tees I have, using the pvc jackets would be very expensive for those and instead they use the foil coated fiberglass duct type insulation. Aside from looking bad, is there any reason to stay away from this? I researched pack-on type cements and could only find one, Min-K moldable, which I don't even know where to buy.
Any advice on how best to treat the elbows and tee's is appreciated including an alternative pack-on type that you have used yourself.
Thanks.
