Is there a problem here?

here's a phone photo I took of a boiler with partial chimney blockage. Collapsed tile. No pterodactyls in sight. They had "someone" who could change it out cheap. Yay.

This is the Barbra Worth. Call says very hot in mgr's apt, smells funny in basement hall. This is what I find...notice all windows open along building, 85*+ in halls and units. All units have trv's, but most not working...no $$$ spent here for a long time, and previous guys had no explination for rollout or runaway heat. Monday I start here...

I think these pics belong on the scariest installs for Halloween thread.

    Amazing

    What a mess

looks like all those boilers were dry-fired. I think you'll be working there for a while.....

    Might I add

that checking the chimney for blockage is a good idea. You know, just in case a pterodactyl laid an egg in it or something. Check the stack for proper draft and make sure the room has good enough ventilation. I've seen boiler room air intakes blocked "to save energy."

    P.S.

Let me know if you want to pass along a pdf. of a paper I wrote on "The Greening of the Classic Steel Casement Window." Its basically a simple set of plans and instructions for hardware servicing and lubrication, making gaskets that make the window air tight, and plans for inexpensive and easy to attach permanent storm systems. Everything is simple and relatively inexpensive. Thermal imaging of completed jobs give a weather tight U value of about .44. Not bad.

Then again, they may not want to spend a little to save a lot. Just making a guess;-)

I suspected draft, but did not think about dry-firing. There is soot all up in the draft hoods. I have a plan to check the venting from the roof down, then check the flames. Water level is good on all units. TRVs are really old and none seem to work. Boilers run from a t-stat in a cold hall, if you can believe it!

Yours looks somewhat like mine! I thought draft when I saw this. Did not have the Fyrite with me, but could not feel a draft in the open blocks next to the vent connection, or from the draft hoods. The main vent connector is 36" or so...should have MEGA draft...

    Wow...that looks scary

I had this once on steam boiler. The rollout was so bad it melted the gas valve. The chimney was not blocked but the between the boiler sections were so sooty the heat and exhaust couldn’t exit to the chimney. I had to remove all the cabinet panels and wash out the soot with a hose. It was one of the dirtiest jobs I have ever done. Black soot was everywhere. That was 8 years ago and the boiler is still running great. I still don’t know the cause of all the soot. But I’d bet the chimney is block with all these.

Your vent may be too big

a 36 inch vent may not be able to warm up properly to vent those boilers, particularly if they step fire.

I plan to prove draft first, then look into barometrics depending on what draft is. No doubt the jackets will have to come off. I already told the owner that I do these all or nothing...I was not interested in just getting the apt's temps under control. I plan to even re-paint the jackets to get everything back in order. The thermal camera will show what is going on with the convectors in the units. I suspect heads on the trv's or as someone else mentioned, traps open and heating backwards...

    Laars Drafthood

Check that Laars in the background, too. Not sure if it is in the same vent system, but that draft hood has been cut, and that's a no-no.
