Some times they make you proud....

This guy came to us as an EMS technician looking for a career about 6 years ago. It wasn't always easy but we knew he was worth the effort. Something about him. He grew up in the "bad part" of Brooklyn and wanted something better.
Now he's doing work like this for me:

    The wiring is temporary.
    Check out those soldered joints.

    Hard to say.

It may a testament to my lack of interviewing skills but I hired and fired 10 guys last year.

The year before that? About the same.

    Those are text book

solder joints, I'd get him a big adjustable and keep the teeth marks off the male adpts. Then this job would be perfect !!

Good job John, keep the guy around.

Great solder joints, but look out for...

Strapping that copper pipe to the Kindorf without using some type of insulation or rubber around the strap. Had to replace a section of 4" copper at my last job because of the reaction between the galv. Kindorf and the copper. Keep up the good mentoring!

    great looking job.

Solder joints are excellent. Nice to see someone else who really cares about what their job looks like. Agree on the copper to strut contact, cush clamps in order.

    Influences

Let's not forget the example you set too, John. I've seen a bunch of your jobs lately and it's clear that you care about the quality of your work and the customer's satisfaction... If a good worker sees that, then, I think, he'll be motivated to achieve those standards.

In lurking on the Wall for the past few years, it seems to me that finding and keeping quality workers is a constant effort. I'm amazed that there hasn't been an effort to create a hydronic industry organization that would establish a curriculum and a set of standards for training wetheads. While tradional "plumbing" might not appeal to the younger generation, specific training for hydronic and steam heating might be "cooler" (could be a pun there)...

I know that Eugene Silberstein is trying that with his classes at SCC in NY, but it would seem to me that this is something that could be brought to the VoTec and BOCES environments.

When I was taking tekmar training in Canada this past August, I asked the Canadian wetheads about training and the availablilty of qualified workers. They said that there is a n established number of technical colleges that produce well trained and qualified plumbers.

Why can't we do that here?

    P.S. John, check your email...

    Nice Work John!

I am in the process of setting up interviews to hire someone. Wish me luck - I need a good kid to help me.

Very nice work. Very professional. A note on the kendorf, some supply houses actually carry coated kendorf. It's just paint but I've been told that it does prevent corrosion. if anyone has heard differently please let me know.
