I assume you are talking about standard 275 uprights vs. safety tanks. The obvious advantage is space saving in favor of the uprights. I have 3 275 Roth tanks in less space than 2-330 would use and have more available storage. The only real disadvantage to upright is having to pull oil off the top of the tank. This can lead to more air problems or require the use of a "Tiger Loop" device. Standard uprights that can be gravity feed seldom have air issues....be advised there are exceptions to every rule.

I think he means standard 275 or 330's
I read it as regular tanks. To answer...It depends on each application. If it is outside it's either, in a basement I would say a vertical would be best.0 -
are you talking about same style of tank in different positions, one vertical and one horizontal?0 -
Vert or Hortz tank
If I understand you, you are deciding between a standard 275 oval in a vertical or horizontal configuration.
Not the difference between a 275 vert and a 330. Am I correct?
In the basement, the 275 horizontal would take up a bit more space. You must not store anything on TOP of them, regardless of the configuration.
The only real difference would come into play if you are outside, where ground movement could affect the tank. A 275 horizontal has a wiser foot print and is less likely to be affected by ground movement, (fall over).
A properly installed outside tank should never be in danger of falling under any circumstances, however a "properly installed tank" becomes the operative term there.
A 275 horizontal is "already on its side" and won't ever get there by accident.
BTW, Al talked about his 3 275 Roths. That equals 825 in one installation. I think NFPA 31 probably would have a bit to say about that gallonage in one installation.
660 is the maximum allowable, that is why 330 tanks are made, so they can be twinned and still be within the standard.
