vitodens comfortrol frustration

ok, so I just got my wall mount base and boiler temp unit for my vitodens 200 (I like to twiddle dials and see the outdoor temp!) and i'm having trouble setting it up (which is weird and frustrating because I just installed one for a customer last winter)

I set the coding at 019 to 001 and 020 to 001 so it should be recognizing the comfortrol as being a remote but I keep getting an error 078, and all that is in the manual is "comfortrol" (???). also, I get this strange readout on the boiler temp module: a charcter that looks like a partial 5:7: 8 (???). and the burner fault light is on. oh, and when I access the coding when the comfortrol is on the wall all setings are _ _ _.

I'm not exactly sure on the dipswitch settings for the boiler temp module, the instructions that came with it reference dekamatik and trimatik controls but not the comfortrol. I tried all possible combinations though and get the same result.

I remember the one I set up last year being a headache but this is ridiculous. i'm probably overlooking something simple. HELP!

edit: ok, a reset took care of the burner fault light but all other symptoms are still happening.
