crackeling WH

I was lead to believe that a popping and crackeling WH has a layer or calcium or hard water sediment on the bottom...what it the suggested cleaning method for this?? Unit is only 5 yrs old at most, GE 40 gal, 38K unit.

thanks for the info, it confirmed what i suspected about the sacrificial rods and hot water tank life.
