R-407C

R407 is the current replacement for R22. As R-134 was to R-12. Please note it is not a drop in but a replacement with similar characteristics but doesn't cover all R22 & 502 applications.
Unless something changes, in the future your choices will be R-410 (new) or R-407 (new or retrofit for R-22/502).

    R-407C

This has to be the strangest refrigerant I've come across. It's about as " dynamic " as ice water , runs at R-22 - like pressures ..it's just weird. I can't see this stuff catching on ( I hope not ). At least the R-410A seems to work well ( for the couple of systems I've seen ). Strange times in commercial air conditioning these days.

Don't go getting excited, there troop. 407C is the common replacement for 22 in Europe and Canada. Makes more sense to me than the 410 we have here in the 'states-closer P/T. I've already seen it in some York chillers. I'm sure the folks representing Puron will say it is EVIL! For that reason alone, I say let's all vote for 407C.

    R410??

What specifically don't you like about 410? We've installed quite a few systems with it and had good results. I little less forgiving with the charge but once dialed in, it performs well.

I have only experienced this in the 10 ton system I started last week ( direct expansion , air cooled condenser , fan speed head pressure control ). In this application the 407C just seemed " lazy " ...50 lb suction , 200 head , 17 superheat , 12 subcooling ( just measured superheat and subcool for heck of it , it was not to be used in charging per manufacturer ). Big coils , lots of expensive refrigerant that didn't seem to do much. It blows cold air and makes a hot discharge line I guess , but I can't wait to see this thing when it gets cold outside...I'm certain I will. -M

    R407

    You are correct Will.
It is also big in China
Imagine if all those knockoff ac condensers shown at ASHRAE amongst the importer area ever makes it to the US soon

    Refs

I don't have a problem with 410-a gas is a gas. I just don't understand how the rest of the planet picks an environmentally safe refrigerant to replace 22, that has closer properties to it than 410, while we here in the 'States have Puron. 407c is expensive here now, but the price would fall in line if our equipment called for it.

    Useful Information.

Go to www.refrigerants.com Gives complete breakdown of ref. blends and their characteristics.

    oil return

In my opinion , 410A has it all over 407C in DX , air cooled applications due to it's higher pressures ( one advantage to this is oil return ). Long line , low ambient conditions while maintaining decent suction pressure sold me on the 410A Puron. From what I've seen of 407 , it's a low suction pressure alarm in a can. -M
