Patented special material protects sewage pumps from abrasion

Wilo: Wide range of pumps for municipal sewage technology / „Wilo EMU FA“ series also for larger flow volumes and delivery heads / Impeller and pump housing strained intensively in the case of abrasive fluids / „Abrasite“ chilled cast iron: seven times longer service life compared to conventional cast materials

Hof. When pumping sewage and when used in sewage treatment plant technology, pumps can be exposed to very unfavourable operating conditions. The fluids to be pumped involve an additional strain because often not only more or less intensively soiled water must be transported, but also fluids with abrasive components. Especially under economical aspects special importance is attached to powerful and reliable pumps with a long service life because every maintenance and repair service involves a – sometimes very cost-intensive – interruption of the pump’s operation.

The pump expert Wilo offers a wide range of pumps for operating in municipal sewage transport and sewage treatment plant technology. For example, the „Wilo EMU FA“ series comprehends especially powerful submersible sewage pumps for the dry sump and wet sump installation. They offer a maximum delivery head of 118 metres or a flow volume of up to 2,600 litres per second. Thus, they are very suitable for installations in which large quantities of fluids are pumped.

Individual components like the pump housing and the impeller are exposed to strain, which, depending on the consistence of the fluid, can cause wear at an early stage. Hence, when manufacturing WILO EMU pumps, the needed material is used which is adjusted in its properties to the media to be pumped.

If there is a large concentration of abrasive particles like, for example, sewage with a high sand content, conventional cast parts withstand only for a short time. Therefore Wilo EMU manufactures pump housings and impellers optionally from the patented special material “abrasite“. This is a highly alloyed, extremely wear-resistant cast material. This material has a martensitic basic structure with a high degree of chrome-mixed carbides, whereby a very high wear-resistance is achieved.

In laboratory tests it could be detected that “abrasite“ facilitates a seven times higher service life of the pump in the case of abrasive media compared to usual cast material. At the same time the breakdown risk is reduced, maintenance intervals can be prolonged. Below the line, pumps, which are equipped with abrasite-coated elements, offer a very good total economic efficiency during the whole life cycle.

Pumps from the Wilo EMU „FA“ series are suitable for many fields of application in municipal sewage transport and sewage treatment plant technology. Due to the use of ‘abrasite’ chilled cast iron, a patented special material by WILO EMU, the impeller and pump housing become especially resistant against abrasive media.
Retired and loving it.
