When feeding a cast iron radiator on one side is it better to make the bottom the supply and the top the return or top supply and bottom return? I have seen it done both ways.

Top supply, always
otherwise the water will rise immediately thru the first couple of sections, after it enters the bottom tapping, and the rad won't heat all the way across. Ask me how I know that...........

Yup
managed to get one backwards in my own house once, years ago...... wondered why it didn't heat well. The answer didn't come up until I started experimenting with circulator sizes, then I actually had a bit of delta-T across the rad and could see what was happening.
