Add-on boiler control

The supply temp, gpm, actual delta T, type of heat loads, condition/type of chimney, heating cycles - all will affect potential for condensation and how the ODR is set. I believe I addressed all of this in your other post.
Short cycling is a likely result when you have a substantially oversized boiler. This will shorten the life of your equipment, and increase likely hood of condensation in your chimney and flue piping
As I mentioned in your other posting, you will need to address these settings with your contractor so they match your system.

Add-on boiler controls
Hi All,
I recently had a new boiler installed. It's a Burnham PVG-4 with a indirect DHW. The house has single pipe hydronic heating (convectors). The boiler control is an ARGO ARM-2P with DHW priority. The DHW has it's own circulator so we're talking two zones.
I'm curious about adding additional control to the system to save a bit more energy and money. ARGO offers a plug-n-play (almost) DPM2 outdoor reset control. However, Tekmar has the model 260 which has outdoor reset and lots of other nice features. It will require a heating contractor to install The Tekmar as I don't feel that confident monkeying with new equipment. The ARGO control requires plugging in a cable and adjusting 3 settings.
Is outdoor reset enough or do I want all the bells n whistles of the Tekmar?
Thanks for your help, Roland0 -
Go with the Argo
While not as sophisticated - in practical sense, it will offer you comparable savings - and a much easier installation.
The primary difference is the shape of the reset curve. Tekmar can fine tune this to your heat radiation. The Argo unit is a straight line reset.0 -
Stay w Argo
While Tekmar is a bit more advanced, and you can select a curve more closely suited to your radiation, in my mind the difference in performance would my minimal. Tekmar is an actual curve - the Argo is more of a straight line.
The lower cost and ease of installation is definitely worth it.0 -
Boiler add-on controls
Thanks Glenn,
Do you have any idea how the boiler minmum temperature will be affected using ODR? The two situations I've read about which must be avoided are boiler short cycling and sustained opperation below 140*. Thermal shock and excessive condensation being the outcome of low operating temps.
Thanks, Roland0
