Paver experience

Wallies,

We are getting ready to do a rather large area of brick pavers set in sand with snowmelt below it. I and the paver contractor are concerned with potential paver movement on top of the typical insulations (any of them for that fact) and wanted to seek your experience.

What we DON'T want is to have to pull the whole system up at some point due to crushing/shifting issues with the pavers.

Anyone have experience in this area?

We've proposed 1" 25 PSF XPS (3600 lbs/sq. ft.)

The area will be seeing "normal" residential traffic going into and out of the garages.

TIA

ME

    Flat or sloped driveway?

I remember one project in Utah that tried pavers over sand. They ended up pouring a slab with the tube then bebding the pavers (dry set) with a sand bed on top of the slab.

The plaza levels at Deer Valley Resort are done that way.

I'd worry about water running down thru the paver joints and allowing the pavers to shift on the ridgid insulation board??

    Sand under pavers

Have had frost heave (no radiant underneath)...most pro labndscapers choose rock dust, but costs more

    Hey Prof,

if you have time, please check out the thread about nuetralizing condensate. I think you had some experience with this issue.

As for snow melt and pavers, with only getting snow maybe a couple of days a winter here, sorry, no experience.

  • On the flat...

And for the most part, the pavers will be locked in by a concrete curb surround, so I'm not too worried about shifting as much as crushing.

Pavers installation on top of slab

Have done several installations this way , 2-3" RCA base, barrier insulation, wire mesh, fasten pex, approx 21/2 -3" of cement over the pex, then set pavers. This one was done last winter - no problems. Used 2 Prestige 250 boilers with Tekmar 665 controller. Customer is happy - I'm happy.

I only spec the barrier insulation when there will be no idling of the system,
  • no snow melt experence

Mark i have no snow melt experence but do haave retainer and paver block experence ,i would think if the paver are set with some drainage pipe set with a bed of blue stone gravel beneath a bed of quarry process 4 to 6 inches compacted and instead of sand most in my area use stone dust and compact that you could set your pex ina bed of stone dust it compacts very well and with proper drainage drainage channels set below i would be hard pressed to believeit would heave ,is this snow melt and paver going to see residental traffic or commerical (heavy trucks ) i have a buddy who does miles and miles of paver and 2 years ago he had done a huge driveway and he had worked with the gentlemen putting in a snow melt system i will ask him exactly what he had done ,i know it was huge he had said he had 5 or 6 sub pump station along the drive and 2 seperate boilers and another gas main ,peace and good luck clammy
