Burnham vs Crown vs Phase III Indrect Water Heaters

I'd be surprided if it wasn't very, very similar to the Crown tank.

it's always interesting to me how the exact same tank can vary by 100 bucks or more from jacket color to jacket color. Shop around keeping in mind which brand or wholesaler provides the best service and warranty help, should you need it.

The coil in the new Bradford White is huge, looks to be 1-1/2" od! Although the connections is only 3/4"????

I have finally brought the selection down to three for which brand of Indirect fired heater to purchase. The three models are Burnham AL50SL or AL70SL, Crown mega stor MS-53 or MS-79, and Phase III Smart 50. If I could get some opinions on these three I would appreciate it. They are all just about the same price at my area supply houses. My account is at Arron & Co which carries Burnham but I can get the other two at Johnstone or GPS. The boiler is a Burnham series 2 164000 btu, with well water. As far as I know I do not have hard water.

    Water Heaters

I can vouch for the quality of the Crown Megastor water heaters. They are constructed entirely of stainless steel. However, there is certainly nothing wrong with the other two. My choice would be the Crown.

    Well water

I'd go with the Phase III, if it's still tank within a tank design.

    I prefer

tanks with a smooth coil HX.

I have had excellent luck with the Phase 3 tank in tank, also sold as a Weil Brand.

Check the performance, I'd bet the Phase 3 has the most amount of HX surface and best performance. And the lowest pressure drop.

I'm looking seriously at the Heat-Flo tanks. They build some nice large coil, dual coil indirect tanks. Nice for a solar feature or double coils piped in parallel to drive the return temperatures down for mod con indirect tank use. Sold under the Oventrop name also.

    Megastor clean out

The megastor has a clean out on the top. If there ever is a sediment problem, you can really do a good job of cleaning the tank out by removing the cover and use a hose to spray the inside of the tank out.

    I looked at Heat-Flo also............

...... and it seems like a nice tank if the cost is low enough. The coils are pretty small in comparison to either of Viessmann's dual coil models. With solar, or condensing equipment for that matter, I would think HX surface area is the most important spec to consider for overall efficiency and recovery rates.
