Protecting against corrosion and minimising wear by means of ceramic coatings
Wide range of pumps for applications in municipal sewage tech-nology / 'WILO EMU Ceram': high-value two-component coating as a cost-saving alternative to stainless special materials / Pro-tection of pump components in contact with the fluid against corrosion and abrasion / Low surface coarseness increases the pump's efficiency / Four versions for different fields of application and fluids
Hof. Pumps in municipal sewage treatment and in sewage treat-ment technology are needed for diverse applications. One exam-ple is pressurised drainage, which ensures a safe and economical sewage disposal in difficult topographic conditions into the sewer system or directly to the sewage treatment plant.
Referring to this, the pump expert Wilo offers an economical com-pact range for safe sewage transport to the sewage treatment plant. The scope of applied constructions ranges thereby to pow-erful submersible pump for large flow rates. Frequently those pumps are applied under hindered conditions, which require re-sistance of abrasive and corrosive influences.
Wilo manufactures in its works in Hof, Germany (Wilo EMU GmbH), pumps which are designed especially for such applica-tions. The diversified offer includes, among other things, sub-mersible sewage pumps for wet and dry sump installation, sub-mersible propeller pumps and submersible pumps, but also sub-mersible mixers for sewage treatment plant technology. In order to prolong service life of the pumps used for abrasive and corro-sive media, highly resistant special materials are used for the manufacture of pumps. Those pump systems, however, are more expensive than conventional applications and the delivery times could be longer.
An interesting and cost-saving alternative to those materials is a coating with 'WILO EMU Ceram'. With this high-quality solvent-free two-component coating made from polymer and ceramics proportions, pump components, which are made from cast alu-minium or cast iron, can be protected efficiently against corrosion and abrasion.
The 'WILO EMU Ceram' coating features a high degree of wet adhesion of 15 N/mm² which guarantees a high abrasion resis-tance. Due to withstanding high mechanical strain, for example, even sewage containing a high degree of sand can be pumped. In sewage treatment plant technology this coating is recommended, among other things, there where precipitants are added to the sewage in order to eliminate phosphate. In addition, components coated that way are less coarse on the surface, whereby in most cases even the pump's hydro-mechanical efficiency is increased.
Pump housings and impellers coated with Wilo EMU Ceram have an increasingly extended service life thus the effort for mainte-nance is reduced because less wear at the same time means less costs for maintenance and repair. Below the line, through the entire life cycle there is a considerable improvement of total economy (life cycle costs) in many fields of sewage technology.
The coating is available for the entire Wilo EMU product range and it can be applied on any pump components in stock also after-wards. In a final step, this does not only imply shorter delivery times compared to the use of special materials. Depending on specific demands of each field of application or the fluid, the four variants 'Ceram C0', 'Ceram C1', 'Ceram C2' and 'Ceram C3' can be selected, which differ in layer thickness as well as in the property of the coating.
