Weil McLain SGO vs. Burnham MegaSteam

it is a 3-pass boiler. This design makes it more efficient and easier to service.

We've installed some SGO boilers and they're not bad, but they are pin-type units. This heat exchanger design is more difficult to keep clean.

The Mega-Steam is the best residential steamer on the market. Sure it's relatively new, but it comes from a first-class company. Go with the Mega-Steam.

Weil McLain SGO vs. Burnham MegaSteam

I need a new steam boiler. My oil dealer suggests the Weil McLain SGO. I mentioned the Burnham MegaSteam to my oil dealer and he said it is suppose to be a good boiler but prefers the SGO over the MegaSteam. His preference for the SGO over the MegaSteam is that the MegaSteam is new and he does not know how it will perform in the long run.

What has your experience been with these two boilers?
How easy are they to maintain during the annual cleaning?
Which one would you recommend and why?

    Thank you.

    I'll second that

I have to agree with Steamhead on this one. I've installed both and like the Megasteam. Alot of thought went into that system and it's backed up by a first rate company...IMHO..

    As a side note..
Make sure to install (either system) by the book for the best performance and make sure all of your steam piping is done in black iron and wrapped for best performance...

    what would I do?

Would you by a brand new Ford from a Chevy dealer???

I would go with the contractor that you trust first over any brand decision. Remember, the folks on the internet may be smart, but are they the ones in your basement at 10pm when you experience a problem?

There are great claims made every day on new products. If you want to be his "Guinea Pig", that is your decision to make.

Remember, you have to live with it, not us here in cyberspace.

    Made me a switch

I used to do a lot of SGO's, put in a Burnham Megasteam in Feb and I will not use anything but the Megasteam from now on whenever possible. The boilers are truly awesome, great efficiency, very quiet and the most stable water line you will find. They made a believer out of me!!!

    Steamhead,
Just a question, I have a supplier who has been hounding me to try a Mega steam. I have a job to do and we haven't spec'ed a brand, you know long time customer says just use a good one. I was going to use my old regular ECT Peerless.
Sorry to ramble, Question do I have to have access to the rear for cleaning on a Mega? This may be the problem on this job. Supplier says rear cleanout is not needed? This will be a replacement for a 53 year old American Standard with a bad coil.
    Thanks
    Scott

  • Scott, as I understand it

the Mega-Steam can be cleaned either from the front, or the back, or both- just like the MPO. It's a 3-pass with ALL the advantages of its type.

    I'd go with the Mega-Steam.

The MegaSteam has cleanouts in the rear to access the flue collector since this is a rear flue boiler (Three Pass). Since the flue with an elbow will be on the rear, you should have more than enough room to access these plates to vacuum out the flue collector. The rest of the cleaning is done from the front. When you open the swing door, you will have access to both second and third passageways for cleaning and brushing and full access to the combustion chamber. Thanks for giving MegaSteam your consideration. We're quite sure you won't be disappointed. Here is an MST288 MegaSteam in our display van that I just finished piping up with a double dropped header. The shot of the right rear shows the rear cleanout plate and flue connection.

Thanks for the pictures, The house that this would be going in is actually my uncles so you can understand why I am concerned. If this doesn't work correctly I'll have an 82yr old man on the phone or in my driveway every day. I think I'm gunna give the mega a shot.
