Rock 'N Roll Boiler - DF

Dan Foley
Dan Foley Member Posts: 1,268
We did this boiler replacement at the legendary Dischord House in Arlington, headquarters of Dischord Records owned by Ian MacKaye. Ian is a punk rock icon as guitarist/frontman for Minor Threat, Fugazi and his new band, The Evens.

I got to know Ian a few years ago when he was having problems with the steam boiler at his residence in DC. He found me through this site and have become good friends. We both grew up at about the same time in the DC area and had much in common.

My ace crew of Papa, Brian and Dragan knocked out this change-out and Papa has a few knots on his head to prove it. The basement is only about 5' tall. - DF

  • Dan, you are now officially my hero. I bet Ian is quite the fellow to have conversations with. My old band used to cover "Minor Threat" (the song) actually.
  • you lucky man

I am extremely jealous. He has been the front man for some of the most influential punk and hardcore bands ever. I still remember my first Fugazi show. It is always great to meet your heroes but actually work for them, that is an honor!!

    Rob,

I missed you at REX. I saw you several times but you were engaged in conversation and did not want to interrupt. I did have the opportunity to meet your business partner, Dave. You two do a great job! We will do some business together soon. -DF

I have to admit that is way cool getting to know celebrities like that. Maybe you could get him to tune that electric guitar in your office. Ha! I have to admit I have never heard of this rocker, but I'm an old hoopey who thinks music stopped after Crosby Stills and Nash stopped recording. We used to have a band my daughter knew, called "Fall Out Boy" stay in our basement when they were in the area, back before they made it big. They loved catching up on their laundry and getting a home cooked meal. Now I'm sure they have people do all of that for them. Must be nice. WW

    Guitar

    Hi Wayne,

Yes, my guitar does need to be tuned. I should have traded Ian some guitar lessons for the boiler work we did at his house. Good thing for me my boiler work is better than my guitar playing! Hope to see you soon. -DF

    I'm 38 now, but...

...I absolutely still do listen to Minor Threat.

When I was in High School, they were one of the biggest things in my life and those simple straight forward lyrics still speak to me now and hold the same relevance.

Minor Threat was one of the leaders in the Straight Edge movement.
They preached loudly the message "No drugs. No alcohol. Sex after marriage."

Even those who didn't follow that lead respected Ian's conviction and dedication.

    Plus the band KICKED ****!

I work for lots of celebrities here in NYC and I'm rarely starstruck. In Ian's presence, I might actually genuflect.

    Yeah Rob

it's true. I even took the lead singer to the airport one Thankgiving morning. They were very nice young men. We have a wall in the basement that they all signed. We still have a band from Chicago stopping by called "The Fold." They are coming through town at the end of the month and will stop in. They are starting to make it through to the big time. I hope they do. My daughter is a professional photographer and went through a phase where she would get to know the bands she was taking pictures of. Some of her work was on the MTV web site. WW

    Old Rocker

My son turned 16 yesterday. Whew, what a ride.

Mitch attends Lincoln High School, and this is the first year the school has offered "Guitar" as an elective. The school was so overwhelmed with registration for this class that they actually had a "Lottery" for registration. Mitch was one of a few who got in.

For his birthday, he asked for some Jerry Garcia/ Grateful Dead. Is that a son to be proud of or what?

    Not anymore Paul

The last time we were in touch was 2 years ago when they did a show here in MD. My wife had their E-mails and cell phone numbers back then. She called them and got put on "the list" for backstage passes. My wife made some baked ziti for them as it was their fav. Since then they have changed their contact info and are protected by their managers from the likes of us. Tell your daughter to check out the band called "The Fold" They might make it big real soon. Checked 'em out already. Good sound. I'll let me daughter know about them.

I remember telling my niece about an import band that she'd never heard of. Told her to keep her ear to the radio, they're going to be big. That was U2.

I love it when a plan comes together.
