Isuzu or Sprinter?

which spends a lot of time in the shop (6.0 diesel headaches)5 times in 52K miles!
I owned a FSR Iszuz many years ago. Fairly primitive and ugly but extremely well built.
The new 08 F series Iszuz are upgraded in the cab space and creature comforts. Colors available for the cabs, finally. Dealer is predicting 14- 15 MPG.
Sprinter has better options and from what I hear into the 20's for MPG. Although as much money as a decked out 1 ton 4X4 Dodge C&C??

Isuzu
Isuzu certainly knows how to make a diesel engine.0 -
Four months ago dumped one of my
Chevy cut vans 2000 yr with 115,000 mi, for a sprinter 2500.
Cut the fuel bills in half, no problems so far.
Both the 2000 and the 1999 Chevy's have been nothing but problems. I plan to replace the 1999 with a sprinter.
Sad that made in America is such junk, I would by a Chevy or Ford but I feel taken.

I had problems with my 02 ford powerstroke. I had to trade it with 65,000 miles on it. I t was very depressing. 1 problem after another. I traded for a sprinter 3500 140" 06 model. It gets between 24 and 25 mpg during the warm months and 22 to23 during thw cold months. There are a couple of quirky things about it. E-mail me or call me and I can explain in detail.

We have two Sprinters and a Mitsubishi cab over that is a crew cab and seats 7. our sprinters are 02 models the first year imported and have had teething problems with emmisions. Still one has over 100K miles runs 100% no loss of engine performance and the front end and chassis are remarkably tight despite our wicked bad Mass roads,15 billion for the big dig and the pavement inside isn't smooth.
The mitsubishi is 1 yold 0 problems 25k miles we get 11-13MPG with a 14 Spartan service body and the big cab. I can believe 14-15 with smaller cab and 12 foot. For what it's worth we thought the Mitsu had it all over the Isuzu but that was before the Isuzu redesign.

Joel, how does the Sprinter compare mileage wise
I keep hearing low 20. Is that realistic? If so why so much better than the Isuzu's?
Isuzu is advertizing a more fuel efficient engine, 6 speed auto with OD and dual lock up torque converter 2nd and 6th.
I like the unlimited miles 36 month warranty on the Isuzu. I always biurn miles before months.
The yellow, now available in either brand would be a nice touch for my new solar focus company.

I think the GM trucks have been greatly improved in the last few years. I have a GMC 3500 extended WB with the Dura-Max and Allison trans. We get 16MPG around town pulling a trailer. With over 55,000 miles it has never been in the dealer for anything other than maintenance and inspections. Is still has the original brake pads. The older GM and Ford stuff was junk. Actually a friend of mine has a 2005 E-250 van that is in the shop as much as it's out.0 -
I just got 1 of 2 new 2007 GMC vans that my company bought this year. Within the first 500 miles, both vans had a shimmy in the front end while braking. Dealership had to turn the front brake rotors down. Whitin 750 miles, my side sliding door would not seal tight to the body, and I would get rain water running in. Dealership had to adjust the strike plate. The other "new" van had to have a rear end installed at 1,100 miles due to a "shim" problem from the factory. My van now has 3,200 miles, and has developed a whine in the rear end. Sending it to the dealership on Tues. All told, 2 vans, 2 months, 8 days off the road not making money. Thats my recent experince with GMC trucks.0 -
Van
Have had Two Isuzu's one a 1990 nrr 185000 plus miles no mechanical problems weighed 15000lps average load. 12 to 15 mpg. Latest a 2003 frr 58000miles no problems. Just great trucks. Most expencive &least expencive trucks ihave ever owned. John0 -
Sad how much we like our foreign made trucks
and how much we dislike our proudly made in America trucks.

The US manufacturers just don't listen
which is why they are always trying to play catch up.
Fords been building trucks for what 100 years now. How in this hi-tech day and age can they build and send out such a fiasco of a power plant. Certainly Navistar deserves some of the blame whith that un-proven concept engine they produced.
GM struggled(s) with the same diesel engine problems. Remember the Olds diesels. Then the 6.2 Blazers. And a couple more swings and misses.
Yet I've been around diesel equipment all my life. Perkins,Duetz,Isuzu, Kubota among others seem to know how to build a diesel engine that runs more than 20,000 miles without major breakdowns.
Ford is offering a $2000.00 customer loyality rebate on a new trade in. What a deal, the thing is worth 1/2 of what I paid for it a couple years ago.
Ford has earned all the business they are losing over this 6.0 fiasco.

Sprinter Mileage
I drive an '05 140" high roof and get about 17 mpg. That is with a laddder rack which I know cuts the mileage a little.

I agree. While i'd love to buy an American nameplate the fact remains that the other stuff is just so superior it is laughable. With the cars it's not just about how long they last it's the feel or perception of quality. The G.M. interiors just look and feel like Wall Mart compared to a Honda. The buy American crowd should keep in mind that many foreign name vehicles ARE made in america. It's not the worker it's inept management IMHO. They spent ALL their money on SUV's in the 90's and let the car market slide away from them.
We have dual whl Sprinters 140" whl base high roof.they get 18-20 MPG Summer and it drops off some in winter but they idle allot more then. I have heard that the new v6 diesel for 07-08 isn't quite as good on fuel as the older 5cyl.
Sprinter mileage can vary with the set up as they have several heights and set ups. I've heard guys with the standard roof 5.5ft high inside single wheel getting into the 22-23 range without ladder racks. Also talked with guys who have the cab/chassis that they have put a service body on getting as low as 15. So it really depends which version of the Sprinter your trying to compare that Isuzu to.
IMHO the Isuzu is more heavy duty than the Sprinter but the Sprinter is far beyond a regular big 3 van. Comes down to do you want a Van or a Truck?

Speaking of loyality rebate, I've had on going problems w/ brake on my GMC box truck since new. both dealer in my area are horrible w/ warranty work, last time it was @ the dealer they said the Axel housing was causing the problem, but it out of warranty now. presented all the paper work of the numerous related repair I've paid for in the past few years. They offer to refund $500 of the last repair bill & offer $2000 toward a new truck.
I asked the rep. if he would allow me to work @ his home, install lousy equipment, make excuses & cause aggravation, offer lousy service, accuse him of not using the equipment properly & finally offer him a small token toward the same old stuff.
Have to say the silence was deafing...

I have had a variety of vans -
and the sprinter outshines them all. I have the 05, 118 wheel base, reg roof. I did have initial difficulties and was mad as hell at the dealership for not being able to diagnose the problem. It was finally repaired just before the warranty ran out and has been problem free since. I average 28 mpg (cdn) highway and 23 in town - that's generally loaded. Best I have done is 1150 km on a fillup on one quick blast up to northern Alberta. If you don't mind the buy in price - its a vantastic machine perfectly suited our our work. The extended oil intervals save time but not necessarily cash as the mobil 1 is pricey. The built in cab heater is a joy - although the programming is German. If there is a down side - its the traction control - I drive in snow and ice for about 4 months of the year. I'm quite good at chaining the beast to get into and up some driveways - the traction control overperforms and renders the van immobile - but safe. All that said - its soon to be sold - love the van - hate the payments. My 93 dodge 4X4 (5.9 cummins) is being pressed back into service with a spacekap on the back. It too gets 24 mpg highway (after extensive mods to turbo and exhaust) and still is a pleasure to drive.0 -
I must be lucky
Been using chevy since 88, and have had no trouble at all. We have emissions testing here in Ont, and never failed, regular maintenance, duramax diesels in the 3500, or 350 gas, mileage ok (better in the diesel) new or used. Only one thqt was really bad was a ford E350 van, rear brakes once and terrible mileage inthe 6ltriton V8.
lucky me...0 -
Isuzu Trucks are great we have 3 with two of them over 200K no problems and ISUZU is a GM partner so its almost American

Don't buy the Sprinter 3500 (duellie) unless the roads you travel are as smooth as glass and/or you suspend all cargo
in mid-air! What I am saying is that this is the most noisy,
ill-conceived truck it has ever been my dis-pleasure to drive. Give me a Ford 350 any day.0 -
diesels
Unfortunatly we have something called the EPA in this country. The emmision standards for 07 have caused all diesel engines to use more fuel than the older ones. This is affecting all new diesels. I am in the market for a new truck, but I have decided to wait to see what these new engines do. The chevy duramax seems to good so far, the 6.7 cummins is having issues with thier DPF (diesel particulate filter), ford's 6.4 had some injector issues early on, but seem to be relativly problem free so far. These emissions apply to all diesel engines built in 07, including imports.
Hot Rod, what are the problems with your 6 liter? I don't own one, but I know a little about them. A lot of the problems are from the EGR (more emmison BS that is bad idea on a diesel engine). Some guys just disconnect it to avoid the problems. Also, these trucks do not like to sit for any length of time (sticking vanes on variable vanr turbo) and they don't like to babied. Drive it like you stole it. I thought you said in a different post that you had an 05? There were changes in 06, and it seems to be less problematic.0 -
American Made
I've been driving my American made Toyota Tundra since it was new in 01 with no problems. The only problems I seem to have are my fellow union members hatred for my truck because it's "foriegn". Makes no difference that it's made in Indiana, employing American workers making a very good wage. The only thing that seems to matter is the name. Dosen't matter to me, I'll go for the quality and reliability.0
