Sorry, the question was for the fittings in the header.

Malleable or Cast?????
Can you use malleable? It seems that they would be more forgiving. Cast has more area for the wrench, but what else?
This is a two pipe steam with two outlets.
I've heard both opinions, but you would know best.

Sure you can use malleable....most suppliers here have stopped stocking the larger cast fittings. The only problem is not being able to break malleable fittings should they have to be removed. HINT: IF you think you will have to take it apart, for any reason, use neverseize in place of pipe dope. Put in a Smith Mills 450 15 years ago using neverseize and just changed out a section. Use an 18" wrench to loosen the nipples...piece of cake.0 -
like Al said,
sure, you can use mallable..but if it ever has to be taken apart, you'll wish you had used cast..i'll have to try Al's neversieze method..sounds interesting.

I can't find many cast fitting
in these parts and have had no problems using malleable, cast were nice for dissection but in the age of the Sawzall I wouldn't worry over the future.0 -
Good to hear from you, TJ
for those who didn't know, he's called Thermal since he has a "Thermal" Vapor system. See chapter 15 of Lost Art for details of this system.
TJ, unfortunately we have to use what we can get. Malleable is fine now that we have Sawzalls, as stated before.
What kind of boiler are you putting in? How about some pics of the boiler room as well as some rads (since there are no Thermal illustrations in Lost Art)?

Thanx SteamHead.
I'll try to attach pics of the old "installation". I am reusing the Burnham V75. It is down to the block now, and ready for repositioning, and piping. I'm going to do the header in 4 inch (11 ft/sec). I will use both tappings instead of one. I'll send more when I can get a digital camera to operate. There was an error rendering this rich post.
