    secondary circulator

Over at mothers house had to rip out old copper piping due to gate valves deterioration. Installed a P/S system with new ball valves. My question is the best way to hook up system pump. System has 3 zone valves, two upstairs, one down stairs,3 thermostats, all base board. Right now boiler pump comes on when T-Stat calls for heat and secondary pump runs all the time. Boiler is a W-M cast iron. System works great as is, but would like to run secondary pump when boiler is up to temp. Thinking an aqua stat on primary loop to start secondary pump might be the way to go. Looking for any ideas. There is no outdoor reset on this system and all controls are behind the front panel in boiler. System has been installed since 1962 new boiler in '93 same as old one (W-M)CG-5. Will post pics later today if needed. Would like to keep it simple.

depending on your lash up and definition of terms...

a bridge such as an injection system might be an answer to your arrangement. Look under Taco injection products at TACO or if you are certain of the terms you are using , check under TACO Wiring diagrams at TACO.

    How would

you run the secondary circ if you have zone valves? Install a pressure bypass valve? What woul;d that accomplish for you?

What is you reason for wanting to run the secondary continously?

It could be done with 3 way zone valves for a continous circ system. A bit more piping involved.

A long story, happened late last winter gate valves were way beyond repair had a buddy assist me and a long day 12+ hours later had a running system. No i didn't use a bypass valve just 3/4" piping with a ball valve on a bypass (secondary) side. Electronics are not my speciality but piping is. Put new zone valves (white Rodgers)in place of old ones. Had most components on hand just thought I could wait till after season, last winter. I used the P/S to protect boiler from condensing, why I don't know because last system had no boiler bridge to protect itself. Yes I did perform Co,O2 testing with a meter from work.

Actually, all you need to do is wire both circulators to the same boiler relay. On a call for heat the zone valve end switch pulls the boiler relay and both pumps will run until the call for heat goes away. Most residential relays have about a 10 amp rating for the circulator so there shouldn't be a problem but check first.

non responsive by-passes have the distinction..

of a broken swiss chronometer they are likely right twice a day . unfortunately unlike a broken watch, most likely, that one day is going to only come once a year...maybe i am not saying that right...its the way i say things though.

Taco, i series -S are fairly good valves to use.

efficiency and reliability is one of my strong suits, or so i would like to believe...*~/:)
  • That would work

if the system does not have an indirect. But if it does, you wouldn't want to dead-head the system circ into the closed zone valves, by-pass or no.

If the system does have an indirect, you'd need a separate relay for each "zone"- the ZVs would appear as one zone and the indirect as another. The ZVs would pull-in their zone relay (such as R845), thru an isolation relay if needed. The zone relay would then send 120 volts to the secondary circ, and start the boiler and boiler circ via the dry contacts.

  • Maybe

that would be the next upgrade for your Mom? ;-)

Anyway, with no indirect, and the only load being the three zone valve loops, starting both circs off the same relay is fine.

thank you for all the replies and yes when the hot water heater takes a @%$# an indirect is next.
