So I get this job to install a Paloma tankless that has been supplied by a customer. Box has been opened and no instructions. No vent kit provided, and the Paloma website is down and I cannot get a manual. Question is if the vent kit only comes with 2 90's and 2 20" lengths of vent, can more stainless vent be purchased? I need to vent through the roof, and was told by the orange box store that the picture on the vent kit shows side wall venting, which is not possible in my situation. There is a atmospheric vented furnace in the same room, but was told these units require their own seperate vent. Anyone with tankless experience care to point me in the right direction?

    Thanks, Tim

They are a Cat III appliance and thus require their own dedicated vent. Single wall Cat III vent pipe must be used with the proper vent clearance, 5-6". In your case since you want to go up with the vent, thats when it gets expensive. There is a dble wall ss vent pipe (similar to b-vent but stainless). Along with that all the penetration items, accessories and termination. However I have found many wholesalers if they stock these items have limited quantities and watch out, very expensive. First choice would be look for alt install location. Gas and water pipes will cost you alot less.

Since putting it in his living room or bedroom is not an option, up it is. The mechanical room happens to have the hot, cold and gas lines anyway. I guess the problem is the local HD did not tell my customer ( a 75 yr old man) that he needed this vent kit, and now cannot tell me how to get this double wall vent or a roof cap...and who knows how long Paloma's website will be down. It will cost the customer exactly what it will cost to do it right.

    Thanks, Tim

  • try here

these guys are a bosch distributor and have literature on their site, not the full on manuals i'm afraid but brochures do illustrate acceptable venting for the various models

    venting for paloma

    hi tim,
you can get the install manual at www.tanklesswaterheaters.com we can also get you the double wall cat III, another option would be to sleeve the single wall stainless through b-vent it may be cheaper. paloma also has a direct vent (sealed combustion) that may allow you to install in a bedroom or familyroom. check out our website if you have further questions give me a call.

My local supplier sold me the single wall stainless toady, and explained it as "the stainless says 6" clearance, but if the tankless manual says 1", then 1" clearance it is." Given the space the vent ends up being off the wall, I would think 1" is the clearance unless the unit is meant to be stood off the wall or something lame. Paloma also called out a condensate inline trap which I will install as soon as my appliance vent adapter comes in. Paloma themselves offered me single wall stainless 3" venting to rise 10' through an old attic space with no insulation and through a flat roof. I will read the link to the manual later this evening. Thanks,

Right out of Paloma Install Cat:

Maintain a minimum clearance of 3” (8 cm)
around the vent pipe to combustible or noncombustible
    construction, unless otherwise
specified by vent manufacturer or installed
in an enclosed space. If the clearances
    stated on the Instruction/Warning Label,
located on the front panel of the heater
differ, install the water heater according
to the clearances stated on the label.

The real problem I would think is finding sngl wall ss firestops, insulation shields, roof jacks and such.

You were more help than my local HD!! My wife's son has his own store. I bought the SS roof jack as well as the SS storm cap & condensate trap. Not cheap, but same price as the HD horizontal vent kit for all the vert vent kits. I cut the holes in 6" and can enlarge them easily.

    Thanks, Tim
