INDIRECT COLD SUPPLY EXPANSION TANK

Water meters now have check valves to prevent cross connnections or dirty water going back into the main. There is no place for the water to go when it expands when heated, thus the requirement for little usually 1 gal. expansion tanks. Private well systems don't need the extra tank.

    INDIRECT COLD WATER EXPANSION TANK

Have seen several installation manuals for indirect water heaters that show an expansion tank on the potable (cold) water supply to the tank. Have never seen such a requirement with gas fired water heaters, whats up.

    YES COLD WATER EXPANSION

Yes I have seen it and is a requirement in some cases if you have back flow prevention in place.

    Thanks,

    Correct!

Bruce makes a good point and I would like to add another, many homes with wells are now putting iron filters (or curtains) in front of the softener. These iron filters have full size check valves that create a very tight closed potable water system. When water is heated it of course expands, with no where to go it puts undo stress or pressure on water heaters, r/o systems etc.

With more fiberwound pressure and softener tanks you are looking at potential rupture and smiling attorneys.

A.O. Smith wants cold water expansion tanks on all tanks to avoid relief valve dripping and related liability.

Might as well follow the manufacturers recommendations unless you have deep pockets full of cash!
