GB Install / Darin Cook

As long as you have a straight chimney and enough room inside the tile, 3" pvc goes right down the chimney. Buderus gives some various vent schematics in their install manual. You definitely have to use the condensate tee on those long runs. In fact unless you are immediately putting 90's and terminating out of the side wall, you always have to use the condensate tee. I have the pipe supported at the top and bottom of the chimney run. You can pull the combustion air out of the chimney chase itself, it is still in the same pressure zone as the exhaust. Thanks for the questions.

Started this up last week
I took out an old coal boiler converted to oil and replaced it with this Buderus GB. The old coal girl was still in nice shape stamped with a 1939 year of production. It was also a gravity system. I used the chimney as a pipe chase for my pvc venting. The boiler install came out very nice despite some Buderus issues. I am still waiting for some panel rads to come in as I am adding a heating zone. This was the first time I have ever used a junk removal contractor to get rid of the old equipment. What a great move on my part!! My back is still thanking me. I also used some Wilo Star 16 pumps on this. Nice pumps.

Thanks for using Wilo products!

Nice looking job
I like the way you hide the wires from the circs by going behind the board. I recently did that with some piping since it had a crawlspace behind the wall. I havent seen the Wilo circs down by us yet. I suppose I will soon.WW

Looks Great Darin. Are you concerned about the questionable hiring practices of Wilo

What were those Buderus issues you mentioned?
HO here. I like their products, and the GB 142 is high amongst my choices of mod cons.
Thanks, and great looking install,

Where's the tank
Where is the exp tank on this? What type of radiation is connected? What is the unconnected zone pump for. Any Idea how long it took you to build the piping around the boiler. Just curious. Thanks K.0 -
Nice work.......Cook
Tried to use the chimney at my Mom's house for a chase, but DIED!!!!!! The chimney wound up having a nasty offset. Love those iso-flanges. I keep trying to get Wolverine Brass to make them...we'd buy a ton of them. we've been using the Ravens - there ALL made in China! Mad Dog

chimney ?
Was there much of a problem in using the chimney as a pipe chase? Is there any certain requirments ( by Buderus or codes)for termination, support, drainage, insolation etc...? Do both the vent and fresh air have to terminate ou the top of the chimney?
Just curious...I have a couple of jobs I was thinking about using the chimney as a chase.
Great looking install! Thanks

Thanks Wayne
Wiring is in my opinion is the ugly part of the job. It is nice when you can hide it behind the board.

Hello Mr Milne!!
I did not want to blow the vapor plume out the side of the house. Neighbors are too close on both sides. Nice straight chimney but steep side roof, I thought the fire department was going to have to come with the ladder truck to get me down!! Aird Dorrance a local supplier just took on Wilo pumps. They had a buy two get one free counter day, you just can't pass that up and the price was right!!

David/ Buderus issues
The first boiler I recieved was not sitting on the internal boiler bracket. This threw the exhaust alignment out the window. I could not get it on the bracket with both me and my son pushing on it and lifting. I finally called my supplier (N&S Supply) who immediately brought me another one even though it was the end of the day for them. That boiler arrived off of the internal bracket also. I got that one back on the bracket, a minor repair and from there the install went fine. But it cost me about half the work day. Now all that being said, my Buderus product rep ( Tom Kane from JR Baker Assoc ) stepped right up to the plate and tackled this issue. Thanks Tom!! Rich Sebast from Buderus also contacted me while I was on site getting ready to fire up the boiler to offer help. Thanks Rich! All help was greatly appreciated. This is another reason why I love this boiler line. Awesome support!!!!!! If you are looking to get a mod-con David, the GB is a great choice. Thanks.

Hi K
The expansion tank is up in the ceiling. I used a wing ell and some Hepex. This is cast iron radiation with a second zone of a panel rad. The complete boiler install (building pump panel, snafu time, indirect, etc took a little less than 3 eight hour days. Thank you for the questions.

Very nice Darin,
I never tried one of these yet, another curiosity question though, is a condensate neutralizer not a good idea here?

Flanges
I use Webstone, but really like the B & G's better. They swivel at the flange face. No handle option though.0 -
GB-142 Pictures
Nice work Darin! I would like to get your opinion on the last GB install we did. This one was an old oil system and we even relocated the boiler. It is a Historical home and the owner wanted to keep the radiators even though some other contractors wanted to take them out and install hot air with a/c. We also installed a SpacePak system for cooling.0
