I agree, it is really aggravating not to be able to converse with a real person.

  • Those self-checkouts are useless

They never work properly, so it takes more time to use them than to wait for a cashier. I refuse to use them, no matter what store they're in.

    BRAVO!!!!!

My local supplier still has counter people AND people that answer the phone. Don't these corporations get it?

I'm with Steamhead on this one....I'd rather talk to a person than trust a machine. (As a "snide aside"....did you ever notice that they have one worker watching those blasted devices? Wouldn't it be NICER to put them behind a counter and GREET their customers ? It may also be faster!) Chris

    And that one person

Is nearly ALWAYS snide and condescending when you have problems with the wretched machine. They usually ignore you for a least a minute or two whilst talking to a co-worker or another customer and in the meantime you sit there with it beeping and squawking like a mad hen. I refuse to use them. Period!!

    Make a game of it

I like to make it mad; like hold the item in your hand for one second too long and it begins to ****, commanding you over and over to PUT THE ITEM IN THE BAG! When it gets over this, and all is well again, take something out of the bag. Now you gotta see the clerk. The only people I see enjoying this stuff have little electronic Rasberries stuck in their ear, and 2-3 phones on thier belt, one in their hand, blabbing away all the while about nothing too important.
  • now from this woman's point of view

I can not tolerate going through the regular checkout and having some young girl talking to the bagger about what time she will get out of there or about her boyfriend and ignoring me completely. When I am the customer there I am the most important thing in her life at that moment.I take the self checkout every time unless I have an extremely heavy or bulky item and then I still use it sometimes and make the attendant come and hand scan it. Stores where I go are very prompt about helping and sometimes even stand at the end of the belt and put things in the cart as I do them. Maybe they just think I am old and decrepit, HaHa.

I'm with you. I'd rather deal with a machine than most people any day. Present company excepted of course :-)

  • You two must live in areas

where they have machines that actually work. Around here, they don't. But cashiers are just as bad.....

CUSTOMER SERVICE THESE DAYS IS DEPLORABLE TO SAY THE LEAST..
.....NOT JUST IN RETAIL BUT IN ALL FACETS OF EVERYDAY
BUSINESS(DMV,BANKING, ETC. ETC.)WORKERS ARE INEPT AT THEIR
RESPECTIVE POSITIONS AND THEIR ATTITUDES ARE JUST AS BAD.
THIS IS ONE INDICATION OF THE TROUBLE WE ARE IN AS A NATION!

These machines are the future for most people

The upcoming generation is completely comfortable with these machines - and willing to put up with the current bugs in the systems.

Remember the start of grocery line scanners. Lots of problems - delays - etc. Experienced cashiers could key in prices faster....

A decade later and that was no longer the case; and stores had stopped putting price lables on products.

I am sure that this will fall out much like the banking industry and "Tyme" machines (that's what they are called in my area).

The banking industry saw a permanent reduction in cashiers by about 60% due to Tyme machine transactions. Now you can still go to the bank and do everything in person; or you can use the Tyme system (or equivelent) 24 hours a day in multiple locations everywhere. This does not include the "online" banking revolution that has started the last several years where you pay your bills using a computer account.

I am sure that in 15 or 20 years there will something like 10 automatic checkout machines and 4 cashiers in a large store.
