    Bad News For NYers

Contrary to information posted here and at Oil Tech Talk, the Home Heating System Tax Credit has NOT been extended due to the veto of Governor Spitzer. Senate bill S5451 had been approved without a single vote against it. This bill, which provided a $500. tax credit for replacing existing home equipment with Energy Star rated equipment, would also have extended the $.20 per gallon tax credit for biofuels(B20).

Votes for the extension bill were all for and none against in both the Assembly and Senate. Override needs 2/3 of both houses - chances seem good I suspect.

Tax and spend and tax again :)

Looked up the bill S5451 on the NYS Senate website and read the Governor's reasoning in the veto document.

Classic. If we give something back we'll be losing money is his philosophy. Forget about the increase in sales tax on equipment now sold, the available income from reduced energy bills that will generate sales tax, the income taxes of business owners and their employees. And last but not least, the ability of more business' to stay alive profitably in this beautiful, but oppressive, state of New York.

I called my Senator's office yesterday and urged her to lead the way, or at least help override this veto.

won't be overridden, there won't even be an attempt. The veto is about the budget process and politics not biofuel and energystar boilers

Politics is politics for sure! I would hope for a veto and would hope any NYer who believes these tax credits are a good way to spend our money contact all our senators and urge them to override this veto. Oil in my area just topped $2.40 and it's getting cooler. I know many people in my area with ancient equipment (incl. me). Two neighbors updated this spring, motivated, in part, by the tax savings. $20 million/yr cost could be offset by simply expanding our bottle return legislation (to include water bottles (non-carb)).
