    Can you belive this.

Attached is a chart showing the surge we were experiencing on our water mains every thirty seconds. Notice the flow in gallons per minute.

We would have at least three to four broken pipes a day.

I have been stationed overseas for the past few months. I was told that this was normal. That that is how it has been for the past five years. I was told that they have a surge pump. What the #@!#!! Are you talking about surge pump. This is a domestic water distribution system for crying out loud.

Found out where the host nation pump house was. Went in and found a 90 gpm jockey pump with a 560gpm main pump. No diaphragm storage tank of any sort. The pressure switch for the big pump was set to bring it on at 1bar and run it up to 6 bar. That is about 15psi to 90psi. That is a 75psi delta P.

The best part was the average use on the system was 118 gpm. The jockey pump could never maintain that.

I later found out that they used to have 2 very large diaphragm tanks that were removed five years ago to make room for a fire pump to provide water to a base wide hydrant system.

Notice the end of the chart how the surge disappeared. We put in a properly sized jockey pump.

I now have a pump system on order with properly sized pumps and a variable speed frequency drive control to maintain a constant pressure on the system. The host nation engineer was amazed, “New technology” was what he said.

Actually the host nation is very generous. I have made some great friendships and have learned a lot about and amazing culture. Things are done at a different pace here.

Just thought you might get a kick out of the situation. I did.

    Updated to jpeg chart.
