Yes, the contractor was someone recommended on this site. I was just double checking on the other possible causes before I shell out $850 for a repair I may or may not need.

Spitting Radiator Vents
I had a problem with spitting radiator vents spitting quite a lot of water all over my living room wall and couch. After adjusting the slope of the radiator it helped a little but did not solve the problem. Recently I had a plumber provide me with a quote for some repair work and I asked him about the spitting radiator. He said the reason had to be clogged wet return. He said he could dig up the old wet return and replace it. I was wondering if his proposed solution is accurate and whether there are more likely reasons for the spitting. Note: I did have problems adjusting the boiler water level last winter and it always seemed that when I thought I had the right water level, the system would overflow sometime when the boiler shut off and the system cooled. Any suggestions would be appreciated.0 -

Could be the wet return
or a pitch problem, or a leaky water feeder, or something else. Have you tried the Find a Professional page of this site, on the Resources menu at the top of this page?

If the returns are old
it would make sense to replace them anyway. Since yours are buried, you can't see if they are leaking. Buried returns are prone to corrosion from outside as well as inside, so new returns could be justified as preventive maintenance.
