    Death traps

I was touring some real estate today with friends looking to buy a house and saw some amazing stuff.

Worst: a boiler which someone had added a shutoff valve after the T&P valve. WHAT IS THE MATTER WITH PEOPLE? The diapragm type expansion tank was sideways, piped in 1/2 copper and "supported" by a 2X4 propping it up. HWBB throughout the house, piped pretty sloppily but probably fully functional.

Next worst: A hot water heater with a yard long horizontal flue pitched down! Didn't appear to be spilling, but even so, not good.

It really makes you wonder what might be lurking next door.

"my" expansion tank was much worse; it must have been on at least a foot of 1/2" pipe!

Is the problem with the draft control that it's not set horizontally square to the flue pipe? (I'm used to the hood style with natural gas atmospheric burners)

    That's right

it has to be level to work properly. You can see where someone did a combustion test at some point, wonder why they didn't catch the regulator problem?

  • Thanks Frank,

this small boiler room contained an E20 conversion burner, and a Superflue DV water-heater with no C/A supply period!!
That test-tag was put there by the gas utility in Feb/06.

    Good place for an indirect

you only have to supply enough CA for one burner.

  • Thanks again Frank,

but as I said, there is a Prestige with indirect now, the guy loves it.
