OLD Oil Boiler & Burner- Replace or Not

and the Beckett is the model AF, it could be problematic. That boiler runs much better with a higher-static burner such as the Beckett AFG, Carlin EZ or Riello. With the AF, a 68 series boiler can plug up with soot since the flue passages are so small.

If that were my house, I'd put in a MegaSteam.

OLD Oil Boiler & Burner- Replace or Not

I have a Weil McLain Boiler from 1984 and Becket burner. My oil man is saying that it is time to replace the unit.Gas Water heater.
The readings are as follows: Done 10-06
    FT- 553.6 CO2- 9.7%
    02- 7.9% x - 62.6%
    n - 79.9% draft- -0.05 inH20
    CO- 59ppm COud- 95ppm
    AT- 70.01 F

Does this information tell you anything about the condition of the system other than the age?

    We'd need to know more

what model is it (may be shown as "size", may end in 66 or 68)? Is it a steam or hot-water system? Is the boiler considerably oversized?

I never meet a 1984 boiler that was not oversized :)

    1984 Boiler

I had the oil guy recently quote a HB Smith Series 8 three section, cast iron steam boiler pkgd w/ an AFG Beckett oil burner, steam pressuretrol, probe style low water cutoff, automatic steam boiler feeder, pressure relief valve to replace the 1984 boiler and burner. What do you think.

    Old Boiler/Burner

Looked up some of my "ancient" literature to find from your given dimensions that your unit is most likely to be a Model 468 or 468V (depends on back flue connection or vertical flue connection). That being said, the unit is rated at 465 Sq.ft. EDR. To see if it is oversized measure up the radiators connected to the system and find out if they match this EDR then, "rule of thumb" at the time this unit was installed was to add to the radiator "load" an additional 33% for piping & pick up losses. The boiler rating should NOT exceed this amount by more than 5-7% of the "combined" load.
From the combustion analisis figures you posted your unit is running within reason for it's age but could do better. Section sealing (on the fireside) would be a good idea as well as replacing the insulation in the front panel, and the target wall. Your draft over fire is also too high and this is a contributing factor to the high flue gas exit temperatures. Your burner is a flame retention head unit of the first order. A new burner would be (only if properly installed, adjusted, and maintained) more fuel efficient.
There is a lot more that can be done to enhance the efficiency of this "old" beast, but not here.

There was an error rendering this rich post.

did a study on the % fuel savings when replacing older equipment. Replacing a 20+ year old pin type oil boiler with the same type new boiler yielded about a 16 % reduction in fuel usage. These were hot water boilers not steam.
I would have to think a properly sized Megasteam and indirect would yield at least that much if not more
