not to nitpick but I assume you mean 149F supply at 1 gallon per minute as opposed to "1pm". Correct?

Solar
After seeing the pervasiveness of solar and other alternative fuel sources at ISH 2007, I realized we needed to get with the program and offer alternative energy sources to our clients. This project was driven by our client, an architect, who insisted on solar DHW. It is a small rowhouse located in Old Town Alexandria.
We chose an Oventrop system as it was packaged (collectors, pump package, tank and controls) and we had the back-up support of our local rep (Jack Guilfoyle @ Cummins-Wagner) and Peter Biondo at Oventrop. Our ace crew of Brian Golden, Papa and Dragan handled this with ease, with only a few phone calls to Peter to help iron out some details.
Today was cool, cloudy and drizzly yet the collector was producing 149* supply water at 1pm. I have a feeling this is the first of many to come. -DF

Great Job!
To you and your crew.
I am also putting a system in for my own home.
Plus I am doing sub work for a "solar guy" who wants to do PV's
and we do thermal.
A few questions : how is the sch 80 secured thru the roof? I have been having
a difficult time getting HT insulation that's UV rated, what did you use?

beautiful work
as always. Coincidently I am going to an Oventrop Solar class at Cummings Wagner tomorrow with Peter Biondi. I took his abbreviated class on Solar & Radiant floors, at the Solar conference in DC, 2 years ago. I've had several customers asking about it. Perhaps I'll get my chance soon. WW

Clarification
Mike,
I should have been more clear: I meant to say "at 1pm this afternoon". -DF

Oventrop Class
Hi Wayne,
Two of my guys, Bill and Dave, will be at the class tomorrow. I will be headed to Hartford tomorrow afternoon so I won't be able to attend. I will have to catch it next time around. -DF

Attachment
Hi Devan,
The cribbing is attached to the roof with schedule 40 black steel pipe threaded into flanges secured with 2" SS screws into solid lumber. It only looks like sched. 80 PVC because it is painted gray to avoid rusting. The tee fittings are galvanized socket-style railing fittings ordered from Grainger. They are secured with a hex set screw. Since a new roof was going on at the same time, we were able to get down to bare joists and mount the panels securely. The roofer flashed around the risers.
Thanks for the nice comments. See you in Hartford? - DF
PS We used Armaflex closed cell insulation. I don't know if it is UV rated but we have used it for years on AC and HP linesets.

Nice work Dan
I'm jealous, after taking Viessmanns class I am itching to install a system. My supplier also has the Overtrop package available and I'll be showing my customers this package.
Hope to see you tomorrow..
Scott

hybrid solar
Definitely check out Dawn Solar's building integrated hybrid PV/thermal collectors. They can eliminate several of the old drawbacks with solar, ie., ugliness & overheating. Even though it's an unglazed collector, the year-round total energy collection can be better than two separate conventional systems, per square ft. of installed collector. There was an error rendering this rich post.

Armaflex
The Armaflex needs to be painted ASAP.
A more permanent solution is Aluminum or vinyl jacketing. There was an error rendering this rich post.

an excellent!!! solar resource
that I've found as I get back into the solar thermal trade after a 20 year or so hiatus is Tom Lane's book "Solar Hot Water Systems: Lessons Learned 1977 to Today."
it reminds me of Modern Hydronic Heating in its large volume of useful info along with a bit of a price tag (but no doubt about being worth it!). unlike Siggy's book, though, it badly needs better editing and/or layout. still, it's by far the best source of accumulated knowledge on solar systems that I've found yet.
