Open Storage Tank usingPex coils rather than copper coils

I have a customer with a 900 gallon storage tank, which typically uses two (3/4 inch)180 foot copper coils as a heat exchanger, to heat up the water in the tank. The customer wanted to know whether we could use pex instead of copper to keep the cost down. Can anyone tell me what the heat transfer of pex is compared to copper? The copper coils are approximately two feet in diameter and four feet high and sit vertically in the tank. Thanks

  • it's less, and I don't think you'll find most PEX manufacturers are excited about submerging PEX. At least some brands can delaminate the layers in the pipe if submerged for long periods.

Maybe not all, but personally I wouldn't do it.
