Weil Mclain Pool heater leaking

Anyone else have experience with W/M pool heaters? I have a WMPH-95 I installed two seasons ago and it has started leaking at a weld. I'm sincerely hoping they are not going to tell me it's out of warrantee. The thing cost quite a bit and to have it fail this quickly does a bit more than just tick me off. Even if they DO give me a new one under warrantee I'm STILL out labor and materials to change it. Sad, real sad...

    WM pool heater

Saw a Rolls Royce on a wrecker the other day......stuff happens to the best of them. Don't go off before finding out what will happen before you pop a cork. Get with your supplier and the rep if necessary...and why should you be out labor after 2 years??? Standing behind your work is one thing, but we never warranty replacement labor if a manufacturer's part fails after our blanket one year warrantee. This wasn't your fault? Or was it?
  • Not my fault...

As far as I know, can't see what I might have done wrong, it's pretty straightforward, but to answer your question, it's installed in the next door neighbor's house, otherwise known as my friends.

  • yep...

the "never work for your friends" gremlins got me. LOL...

Still, if it was a good customer would you be able to look them in the eye after only two seasons, tell them they have to pay for the expensive heater all over again AND expect them to keep you around afterwards? Not me, I'd do whatever it takes to keep them happy. Hopefully W/M thinks the same way. We'll know more tomorrow.

    check the pool water chemistry

if the ph or chlorine is way out of wack it will go after the stainless. And welds ;)

  • Thanks Rod,

She's pretty diligent about keeping the chemistry right, I swim in it almost every day too and the chlorine is not excessive. I just talked to them and they only offer a 1 year warrantee but I'm working them over on that one. I also called tech support and explained it to them and they say there is nothing I could have done wrong to cause the failure. Fortunately my memory had failed me as to how much I originally paid for it and it's a lot less expensive than I was thinking last night when I found it, but still...

You may also want to look where the chemicals are being added. If it is batch clorinated by dumping chemicals are in the pool, the diluted water should not hurt the unit. If the chemicals are injected into a line upstream of the unit the chlorine could be less diluted and harmful. Just a thought.
  • I agreed that

I agreed that the heating exchanger should lasts longer than 2 seasons..... I guess that what you get for calling your granny's boiler a furance.... :)

    Pool HX

I'm almost positive W-M's exchangers are built by Triangle Tube. If you can't get any satisfaction from Weil you could try them.

    Chemistry

I will second Hot Rod and John's comments about the pool water chemistry and the location where the pool chemicals are added. No metal will last (not even exotic stainless steels) if the chemistry is off. Verify where the chlorine is added and that chlorine and pH testing is performed regularly. If somehow the chlorine is being added so that it passes through the heat exchanger before being completely diluted in the pool, that is very likely the culprit and this failure will repeat.
  • Answers to all...

yea, they just dump it in the pool, no injection.

RJPB... I KNEW that would come back to haunt me! ;)

and thanks for the tip on Triangle, that could definitely help.

Far as I know she's real diligent on the chemicals but I'll ask.
  • Wait a minute...

What about chlorine tablets in the skimmers? uh ohhhh.....

You think W/M would warn you about a thing like that.

    Skimmers

Could there be a skimmer near where they dump in the chemicals?

Oops, sat on that post too long. ;-)

Chlorine tablets in the skimmers or in the pump strainers will cause problems for your heat exchanger.

The founder of Neptune Benson wrote an excellent book that they distribute freely on their website.

  • Bingo...

You musta missed my last post, they put chlorine tablets in the skimmers, three each usually.

    I got...

sidetracked and hit post too late. ;-)
  • Thanks,

I'll read it ASAP. Meanwhile, I'll tell them the story and offer to split the costs with them. Meanwhile, how we chlorinate the pool in the future is another question. Maybe net bags with tablets in them away from the skimmers.
