How I THINK I feel, not HOW I feel

Our heating service techs are asked quite often to put the round style thermostats back in instead of the Carrier digtal thermostats.

Comfort does not only relate to feel it also is how they comprehend things.

    Looks can be deceiving

Had a customer call me last week complaining that the AC was not doing it's job. The house never dropped below 78 degrees.

Showed up on a day when the OD temp was 96. ID temp was 70 degrees according to the TekNet stat. In fact, all of the Tekmar stats were within 3 degrees of each other.

The HO had an old thermometer sitting on a table about 5 feet from the Tekmar stat. You know........the old coil type. It read 78 degrees and 55% relative humidity.

Point is, the HO was not calling because he FELT hot and sweaty. He was calling because a cheap thermometer said he SHOULD feel hot and sweaty. "Not HOW I feel, but how I THINK I should feel"....

He has FIVE Tekmar TekNet stats in his house. All were within a few degrees of each other yet he trusted the cheap thermometer.

The HO said (tongue in cheek) that he was going to return the thermometer and get his money back.

I asked him if he was really that desperate for $6.50....

I could write a post several thousand words long about this but I will not.(WHEW!!)

That old thermometer carried a great deal of clout with that HO. He may have had it for many years, I do not know. I did not ask. It did not matter that he has the newest, bestest technology in his new home. That old thermometer was the sentinel, the "yea" or "nay" for comfort. An old friend looking out for his better interest so to speak. Such a TRUSTED friend that he kept it for so long and monitored it daily. Why not?? It had never let him down before. Until now.

It's nice to have an "old trusty"....we all have at least one.(Wives/husbands do not count!!!)

I guess there comes a time when we need a "new trusty".(Again, wives/husbands do not count!)

After all, that "old trusty" was a "new trusty" at some point.

I will be checking all my "old trusties" now, checking for upgrades. So to speak.

Years ago when I was an apprentice, I was given a boiler replacement. My first. I asked for it and was quite proud.

The owner was an old timer, Mr. French. My boss, who was working for the son, told me to replace the toilet also.

I told Mr. French, who was hard of hearing that I would be replacing his toilet. " WHAT ? ". I said " A NEW TOILET, WONT THAT BE NICE ? "

" I guess so he said, sorta of like loosing an old friend though !! "

I'm sure it was. I'll never forget that.

People hang on to things that work or worked.

  • Persistent \"not enough

heat call" several years ago. Our Mr. Fixit kept reporting 75* in subject space. Tenant kept yelling it was only 67*.

Finally bestirred myself & went to see. 75* on coffee table. Tenant told me what I could do w/ my nice new digital thermometer. She pointed to her piece firmly planted on the window sill in front of the 70 year old single pane window. Sure enough. 67*.

Didn't even try to reason w/ her. Invoiced the job & told the property manager the ball was in his court.

I can relate to that one

No lie..about 12 years ago I replaced a nice state of the art digital one once with a T87 for a nice old lady because at night she did not want to go to bed when the stat said "sleep"

I kid you not...glad she did not see it display "leave"
