I'd like you to meet Alex Leich.
I've known Alex all his life and I'm very proud of him. He's the son of Fred and Kathy Leich, dear friends. Becoming an Eagle scout is one of the toughest things a young man can do, and Alex is almost there. He's allowed to ask his friends and family for help, and he asked me. I told him that I thought the Wallies might also help because we're all friends. He needs to raise $1,300 for this project.
Here's what he's doing:
"I am a Life Scout in Troop 351 Merrick, Theodore Roosevelt Council, BSA. My Eagle project has been approved and will begin on September 13, 2007. The project involves working with the Troop members and families to replace more than 150 running feet of shrubbery along Merrick Avenue on the property of the Troop's sponsoring organization, St. John's Lutheran Church, in time to for the church's 90th anniversary celebration this fall. Also, I will repair two planting boxes and construct two benches at the church entrance. I must acquire all plants and lumber for the project through monetary or material donations. Contributions toward this project will be gratefully accepted. Donation checks should be made out to Troop 351. Please write "Alex's Eagle project" on the memo line. Donations may be sent to Alex Leich, 20 Murray Pl., Merrick, NY 11566."
(If you'd like to help, you can also make a donation through PayPal by clicking on this link. - D.H.)
More info about Alex:
Alex is Assistant Senior Patrol Leader of Troop 351 and will be Co-Senior Patrol Leader for summer camp at Onteora Scout Reservation. He has completed Bear Claw national leadership training and is a member of the Order of the Arrow (BSA society of honored campers). He maintains the Troop's Web site, www.troop351merrick.org
Alex is entering his junior year as an honor student at Calhoun High School. He is a member of the Key Club and VP of the Asian Culture Club, and holds a brown belt in Tai Kwan Do.Retired and loving it.0 -

Thank you for your generosity
Hi, my name is Alexander Leich, and I am currently a Life Scout in Boy Scout Troop 351. The "Road to Eagle," as it is called among Scouts, is not easy. It's taken a lot of hard work and devotion to get where I am now, so all of your generous contributions are greatly appreciated.
Any and all donations that you make will go directly to my Eagle Scout Project, which is scheduled to begin on September 13. The project consists of renovating the front of St. Johns Lutheran Church in Merrick. St. John's is not only the charter organization for Troop 351, but is also the church that I regularly attend. The majority of the flowers and shrubs along the front of the Church are either dead or dying, and the soil and plants need to be replaced. In addition to replacing these plants, I will also be building two benches for the outside of the church, and, if time permits, an irrigation system for the flower boxes.
The Scouts and family members of Troop 351 will be assisting me on this project, but your additional support is always welcome. The plants and other materials must be acquired by donations. Thats where you can play an important part in assisting me with this project. Every donation counts, and if more money is raised than necessary, the extra funds will be used to make the project even more in-depth, or be donated to St. John's for the purpose of maintaining the renovations.
Thank you for your continued support of my project. If all goes well, I hope to attain the rank of Eagle Scout in the near future.
