CO Snake oil?

I didn't realize my ignorance -- 90 percent of HVAC contractors don't perform combustion testing? Check this video out.

That might be accurate
Most times when I see a test hole drilled in the flue pipe on a gas-fired unit, it's one that Gordon or I drilled.
Did you see the down-pitched flue pipe on that one water heater?

Just saw the video and sent the link to all I know in the trade
we have the home owners sign a consent form for us to test. You would be amazed how many people refuse since they do not want there equipment back on. They feel since there is no problem now (so they think) why look for one!
The video is a definite must see.

C.O.
A must see scary scary scary. Never heard it explained this way but makes a lot of sense. Rusting and its locations on heating equipment all of a sudden makes sense.0 -
CO
I'll definitely be paying more attention.0 -

The REAL scary part is the HVAC guys telling this poster that he is full of it. CO testing is a waste. Code prohibits drilling test holes in flue pipe. Testing is a waste of time. Etc Etc Etc.
Truly sad0 -
Testing should not be a customer choice
Without testing we have no clue how anything is truly working. It is the difference between a hacker/fly-by-night and a professional.
Does a doctor give you a choice on whether he takes your blood pressure, or does x-rays etc.??
We use our reclaim machine on A/C without a choice and it doesn't make it the A/C run better but here no one has a problem???0 -
Get it put in the code book.
I have had several upset people that I shut down. They have the gas company and others check and say well its drafting, all the co is going up the chimney and they turn the equipment back on and walk out the door.
Remember can't see or smell co so they think its been working ok now so why bother.
Unfortunately without written permission to test. In there eyes if I am changing a circ or other such item what right to use my analizer then say sorry no heat and by the way you need a new boiler. Few of the authorities of jurisdiction will back us up.

Codes = D-
That is what I like about the video. It really makes the consumer feel like he is getting a raw deal if the contractor doesn't test and puts the consumer on the spot. Every contractor should down load it on their laptop and show their customers. All of a sudden they may be grateful they are using your services.
As long as codes continue to be a D- grade, just barely passing, combustion testing will never be considered.0
