Right on. This should be automatic. How else will you refill the filter bowl? How about the pump strainer and checking for gravity flow to the pump housing? Amazing how many clogged pump strainers I've found over the years, with a clogged oil line to boot.....

Is there any way of piping in an oil tank to minimize the sludge build up? An oil tank I installed five years ago is allready sludged up a bit.One pipe, bottom feed, pitched to the valve, sludge is sticking to the curved portion of the tank bottom walls.I am thinking about adding clean outs as found on marine diesel applications (liability?). Recently read an article about diesel fuel polishing for marine applications. Would changing to a two pipe system using the return to wash down the tank walls help? Was thinking of aiming the return to wash down the walls.Multiple filters with some kind of a bypass? Any ideas? I am aware of the liability of trying to invent a solution but,if you don't ask you'll never know, Jim Cogger0 -
It depends
If the filter is clean I don't bother, if it is very dirty then I do. If the system is serviced every year and the filter and pump screen are changed (it is automatic with me) and the system is primed (this flushes the line)there will be many years of dependable service. It takes us 1.5-2 hours on a tune up. We bill for it and we have few call backs. For those who price shop they get what they pay for.

Piping and Sludge
Jim,
I have always been taught that using a bottom feed tank and pitching it reduces sludge. Our tanks used to feed about an inch off the bottom but code mandated a switch to bottom feed. I would try one of the sludge reducing additives, sorry don't have any names as I don't use them. Our Kero tanks in mobile home parks are always like new inside, try running a tank of kero and see if it has a solvent effect.
