Old Sol does a fine of cooking
Chicken stew kissed by the sun! Toss in 1/2 cup of rice, carrots, celery, potatoes quartered/sliced & lots of chicken. Add water & broth to suit. Set to face sun's rays, turn to adjust once an hour. BTW, it takes a few blinding moments to get to know how to set up and approach without needing welders glasses!
Started at noon.
After 30-minutes: glass dome started to exhibit signs of thermal activity.
1-hour: occasional bubbles indicating we'd hit 212F.
2-hours: actively boiling & giving off delightful odors.
2.5-hours: ready to eat, but decided to let-er-run & see if the lit was right about not burning food.
4-hours: tender & juicy & hot as blazes(G)0 -
might be
a tad slow to boil & cruel to the lobster! But, put in a rack to keep the critters out of the water & with enough patience (time-wise) there'd be no reason why it wouldn't work. I was contemplating layered meals yesterday. The instructions claim you don't need water, or very little water, but I chickened (pun intended) out & added more than needed to accomodate the rice. I added four cups of water, which was spot-on for the consistency I wanted.0 -
And some people say
you can't generate steam with solar energy....... nice job of proving them wrong!

Feel-good cooking!
Not only is solar cooking fun, it's saving lives in places where folks don't enjoy the same energy freedoms we have.
Steam indeed!

Pretty neat!
But it seems like a lot of money for a few mirrors, or am I over simplifying things?0 -

$99.95 with profits said to be going to help build and supply the ovens to third-world countries where they're desperately needed.
Take a few minutes to check out the home page and links describing their efforts. Kinda brings the energy uses we enjoy into perspective.0 -
I'll have to get one
it would be pretty cool to have a pot of stew going at this years solar tour. Thanks, Dave. Bob Gagnon
