I went to there web site and found the same drawing. I have run into this problem in the pastand it is hard to try and tell a home owner that their boiler is installed wrong whenthe booklet says different. I think it is great that burnham is stepping into the mod/con market and the three pass market. It's about time.

burnham boilers install book
I went to look at Burnham boiler the other day. Pump on the return with six zones. They have air problems un even heat, the typical problems that plague a bad install.I preached pumping away to the home owner and what we could do to fix this problem. He pulled out the instal manual and it shows the circ in two locations the suppy and the return. What gives. How can we preach pumping away and have a manufacturer showing two scenarios for there boilers. Burnham please make up your mind. I think your product is ten years behind the rest of the industry but please pick a side in the instructions on where to put the ciculator so we as installers dont waste our time preaching the pumping away method.0 -
Sean
The older I&O manuals did in fact show alternate locations for the circulator either on the supply or the return. But most of them also showed a more detailed drawing depicting a pump on the return with the expansion tank moved to the return side.
Apparently, Sean, you haven't seen or used any of our current boilers or you wouldn't have made the statement about our products being ten years behind the rest! Take a real long close look and you will be amazed at what you see! I have attached the drawing I spoke of earlier.

It's pumping away from the PONPC,The expansion tank. Not necessarily pumping away from the boiler although that would be nice as well. The diagram Glenn posted works just as well as any. There are many times more residential jobs in existence that are not pumping away than are and the vast majority work just fine.

the national u.s. radaitors
I found a old National U.S. Radaitors and Boiler manuel... In one page, they recommended having the pump on the supply side. I checked the date, I think it was around 1965, is that about the time when Gil Carlson trying to preach "pumping away" and ponpc ?0 -
You are correct
Gil wrote his famous paper in the early 1960s.
