Er... possibly... the boiler is a Sime Combi boiler.

how's a diverter valve work?
A repairman came over to assess our boiler which has not been giving out hot water but has been heating our place. This was five days ago. He hasn't fixed anything yet though he did fiddle around with it a bit.
He told us the diverter valve needed to be replaced. This morning the boiler totally stopped firing up when even the heating was on. Would this still be the diverter valve or will he just come back and now say we need a new boiler.
Many thanks in advance!

Diverting what?
People call a lot of things by a lot of names. It's hard to say without more information. What kind of boiler is this? Is there any possibility you could post some digital photos of the boiler, piping, and the valve?0 -
Diverter valve
This is a standard term. Remember "one inta, two outa" is a diverter valve application and "two inta, one outa" is a mixing valve application. In other words, are you mixing two sources into one or diverting one into two? While many 3 way valves can be piped for either application, some (barber-coleman for example)are ported specifically for either mixing or diverting.0 -
thanks
Thanks for the info. I'll try to get some photos up, but at the moment I can't get that to work either0 -
slang
HE might be refering to a zone valve. not all repairmen are schooled in correct technical terminology.0 -
Combi
I'm guessing, but I believe the repairman is referring to a valve inside the boiler that diverts the flow from the heating system through the internal Combi heat exchanger for domestic hot water production. The diverter valve lets you use one pump for both heating and hot water production.0 -
Sime combi boilers are a UK manufacturer.
If the boiler is producing C/H when there is a hot water demand it usually means the diverter valve is passing which is within the boiler casing.
I would wait and see what he quotes for the diverter valve changing. It is a possability this will solve the problem you are having now.
