also noticed a cut in the bottom of the liner and have been loosing water, i think the cut is a two way street and the galvanized pool frame isnt's so galvanized and rust is comming in -

    just guessing

    Have you used some type of chemical to balance iron in the water? Iron out or something similiar.... It must be your water has something in it that reacted with your chemical treatment... Take a treatment to your local pool company, they should be able to test it up quick for you and get you back in shape...

    Iron

    Would be my guess. Chlorine reacts with iron and "sets" the stain.

    "Oxy-Clean" really does work wonders on some stains (including iron) as long as it stays in contact for some reasonable length of time. Repeatedly sponge with a fairly strong solution and it might work...

    Bromine comes to mind as well as iron. Bromine has sort of a dilute root beer kind of brown.
