Chimney Liner

What is involved in installing a stainless steel chimney liner? With all due respect, is it simply a matter if sliding it through the ciney and connecting it to the flue? I am not planning on attempting it, just curious.

Due to concerns about possible condensation with a high efficieny 3 pass boiler I intend to have installed I am considering a liner.

The chimney is in the center of my 85 year old home. THANKS!

It might become more involved. Cold air entering the chimney can cool the liner and cause condenstation issues. I believe they add insulation between the liner and old flue to mitigate that the problem. Did you have a pro size up the job and give a recommendation? A lot depends on chimney location (inside or outside wall, draft, flue size and height, existing liner condition, etc.
  • It sure can be more involved,

like radioconnection says. We all hope they just slide through but sometimes offsets are encountered that usually become a nightmare. Then, is the area within large enough to support the liners required diameter? If your masonry chimney is straight-up through the center of the house, you likely wont encounter offset probs, but then it IS possible!

  • yup,,,

What these guys said. Offsets and narrow spots involve knocking out tiles and brick. It can become VERY involved. I'm an HVAC contractor. I hire a chimney service to do the job for me when I come across the need for one. That way I kow it will be done in the most correct fashion.
