    steamhead might find this interesting

I recieved an e-mail last week from a couple asking for my address. Evidently they had purchased an older house in my community with steam heat (basic one pipe). It seams that their heating bills last winter were horrible (big surprise there). So they had found the wall and had been reading your posts and my occasional posts relating to steam heat and fuel efficiency. Being interested I gave them my address. Well they came over two days ago a young couple in their mid twenty's who bought their house because they like older homes. They were skeptical about how an old steam system can be efficient. I showed them the actual gas bills for the last 4 years (by the way the boiler has now paid for itself and then some)and showed them them our system and using your information and Dan's books explained how steam systems are supposed to work. While looking at the pipes the first thing they said was (your going to love this) "Are those the gorton vents that guy steamhead is always talking about on the wall". Evidently their home had been vacant for two years after the original owners (in their 90's) had died. Their home inspection turned up a cracked boiler which they had had replaced. But there were only plugs where vents should have been. So It looks like you saved another steam system.
