broomwell steam valves (vapor)

1895 victorian home in Massachusetts with 20 antique radiators all with (vapor) Broomwell type shutoff valves (packless). All valves leak steam and boiling water from the tops. CAn they be placed with a more modern alternative? Are modern Pressuetrol sensors indicative of a vacume or pressure system as the boiler has two Honeywell Pressuretrol sensors on it.

Those valves can be rebuilt

A Broomell system is designed to run at ounce pressures- typically less than 7 ounces. You need a Vaporstat to control the boiler at these pressures. The usual Pressuretrol won't do.
The dry return was originally vented thru a condensing radiator into the chimney, so the draft would pull air from the system. If this hookup is gone, vent the returns with monster vents such as Gorton #2 units.
