Burnham LE Series Low Mass Boiler

If your in the market for a new boiler, there are many options. I personally have never installed a sys 2000 but hear plenty of good things about them. The Burnham MPO is the first american boiler to offer a three pass design. This seems like a good boiler also. If you have a big enough budget look at the Viessmann Vitola. It is in my opinion the best in the market.
What type of heat source are you using in your home? Baseboard, radiators, radiant heat? If you a pair a three pass type boiler with outdoor reset and pipe it properly you will see a great savings in fuel and comfort.

    Any Experiences with this boiler

Anyone work with the Burnham LE series boiler? I'm comparing it to the System 2000. How good is it on oil and is it reliable?

    it is not....

the same animal. It is not what I would consider a HIGH eff. boiler. Now if you want to compare a Burnham boiler to ek 200 look at the MPO...that's a high eff. boiler.

    Really ..???

I'm a home owner and looking for my next heating system. Dealer showed me the EK 2000 and it looks efficient, but then I found out about the Burnham. So the EK is the better of the two??

    You definitely want

a 3-pass boiler if it's cast-iron. The LE is steel, and I believe the System 2000 is too. Nothing wrong with a well-designed steel boiler, either.

The other type of cast-iron oil-fired boiler is the vertical-flue pin type, which IMHO is not the best design from a setup and servicing standpoint. 3-pass boilers can be serviced quickly since all flueways are accessible from the front. Of course, a well-installed modern oil burner should not make ANY soot, period.

The Burnham MPO is a very nice 3-pass boiler, as is the Solaia SL series boiler, the Buderus and several others. You can't go wrong with any of these as long as it's sized and installed properly. The Solaia has the advantage of being available from the factory with either oil or gas burners, which allows the owner to have a pro switch burners and burn the other fuel without buying a new boiler.

    Now I'm learning!

Yes I'm in the market for a new boiler (homeowner). I have a weil mclain (blue one about 20 yrs old). Burning oil (with a coil and no indirect water tank) and have baseboard heat which is water. I have 4 zones and approx 3300 sq. I'm told the System 2000 can possibly save me 40% on my oil. I've looked at the Burnham v8, but no one has mentioned a 3 pass system (MPO). I have 2 major dealers of the s2000 and they are priemer dealers (at least 20 installs per year). One of the dealers invited me to his home to see his, he's had it 13 years with no problems. I just want to make sure I'm well informed before I make a big purchase like this. Thanks to all for your help!!

    Burnham

Go with the Burnham MPO, I just had one installed last fall to replace my very old boiler with a coil. I saw my fuel bill drop in half, the contractor put in an indirect and outdoor control, I can now take a full shower, my wife can do the laundry and it cost less to run. My neighbor had a System 2000 a few years back and he claims that any savings he got he's put back into the boiler in parts and service. System 2000 may be a good boiler but I will definitely chalk one up for the MPO in my own experience.

I agree with steamhead on the Solia. I have installed many of these boilers. In Massachusetts we are calling them Biasi boilers. They are great for gas or oil and i have had no complaints. Tech support is great and they listen to contractor feedback.
  • Ahem.

You might want to talk to some old timers who remember, & serviced, American made 3 pass cast iron boilers, before manufacturers decided that "value engineered" pinned boiler sections were the way to go. Just like taking a long trip w/o a map. Chances are we've passed this way before.

    LE

I installed the LE boiler with a Riello oil burner 9 years ago when I built my house. Not 1 problem. Low maintenance. I have serviced the burner 4 times and vaccumed the heat exchanger 3 times. Not much in the way of soot. Easy to open up and clean. Very happy. 3000 square foot house, 2 adults, 3 children, heat and hot water we burn 1300 gallons of fuel annually. Demand start, no outdoor reset. This summer I will be installing a Tekmar control to save some fuel, that will make me even happier.

That being said, with the price of fuel today I would look for the most efficient system I could get my hands on. Whatever you do, make sure you hire someone qualified and competant. The best piece of equipment in the hands of a less than qualified installer is a recipe for unhappiness. Spend the few extra dollars and hire someone who has taken the time to learn the most up to date methods for commisioning the unit. You can't get the results without the proper set up.

    Good Luck,

    My LLE is doing great

But my house is smaller and I needed a small unit with top flue venting. As said look at s 3 pass cast iron unit like Burnham's MPO or the Biasi. The LE only comes in one size and looses efficency when you have to fire it at a higher rate. You'd be much better off with a low volume Biasi sized to your heat loss requirements. Get a Riello
burner and a Tekmar control. A great package value.
