    Efficient boiler

The new Burnham boilers claim up to 86% efficiency. Very often, however, the most efficient things a homeowner can do are tune up the existing boiler (clean, combustion analyze), ensure proper near-boiler piping and adequate mains and radiator venting, and insulate the mains. Next comes an infiltration survey of the house, followed by insulation and modern "low-E" windows.

Very often replacing the boiler fixes nothing, when one or more of the above problems exist.

Provided oil is your fuel, use the Burnham Mega-Steam

Judging by all reports here, it's extremly well-constructed and when installed properly in a properly functioning steam distribution system results in efficiency at the top of physical possibility for a residential steam system.

The only gripe I've heard about it here is that oil is the only currently available fuel.

    Sorry rjhphd, I'm Scottish

but come to think of it, the "consigliere" character in "The Godfather" was German-Irish......

Mike, what type of boiler do you have now? Are the steam pipes insulated? Are there vents at the ends of the mains?

    I'll second the Mega-Steam!
