After a 32 year hiatus from NYC giigs......
Mr Hughes blew the room away last night. Now I know why I NEVER had been able to catch one of his shows...32 years! I was all set to see him in 1986 when he was In Black Sabbath, but we know how that ended. Anyhow. The seating could have been a lil' spacier, but there is not a bad seat in B.B.s place. I had the Cast Iron Cajun Catfish with Collard greens and Babs had the vegetable soup. Glenn went on around 9:30 p.m. His backing band was very good, but I think he's played with better. He did ALOT of new stuff with was excellent, no Trapeze (awwwwww), You Keep on Movin', gettin tighter, Closed show with Burn, No Sabbath. His blood curdling and soul shaking vocals were better than ever and even Babs couldn.'t believe what Glenn can do on bass. When I lie on my deathbed someday....one of my dreams has been fulfilled. Rumble in the jungle...
I'm not familiar with all the incarnations of Black Sabbath, but they always had a good bass player. If this guy is a shrieker, I wouldn't have cared for it, though. Why did the group's members keep changing, anyway?
Speaking of bass players - Oteal, the current Allman bros bassist, is opening for Hot Tuna at Westbury in July. Any guy who can play for the Allmans has to be good, and Hot Tuna is currently playing electric shows only. Jack Casady has never sounded better, and did at least 4 bass solos at a show I saw last year!0 -
Ain't nothing like
LIVE MUSIC...
This is my year to here live music. Glad you had a good time Matt.

I thought....
Berry Oakley Jr was playin for them? Jack Cassidy IS in MY top ten of all bass players. Personalities, drugs, attitudes...like every other band. Actually Glenn just sang for Sabbath. Thank GOD he's get 'er strapped back on. He is one of these guys who can sing Gospel one song, Funk, Jazz, Metal Blues the next...multi-talented super wide vocal range....an ol' black blues man in a white man's body.
Sabbath: Ozzy - 1968-1978
Dio (Rainbow) - 79-82
Ian Gillan (Deep Purple) 83-84
Glenn Hughes 1985-86
Ray Gillen 87-88
Tony Martin 89-91?
Dio AGAIN 1990s
A Ozzy reuinion now and then.
Great band always a quality show.

Go Mad Dog!!! Long Live Rock
The best show I ever saw was the "Come Taste The Band " Tour in 75, Rochester NY. Coverdale/Hughes/Paice/Lord and the incomparable Tommy Bolin. I still feel is Purple's crowning achievement.
I am glad you finally got to see your man, nothing like it. I have 7th row center for Vai in October at the Egg in Albany and plan on seeing Jethro Tull in November at the Palace Theater in Albany. I freaking love live music! Congrats again...

Highway Star...
There was a time when Roger Glover wasn't part of Deep Purple? That's really hard to imagine - him and Lord were the foundation, I thought...0 -
Yes, Hughes and Coverdale came in to replace
the departing Glover and Gillan who made a stab at a band of their own....Glover is a very competant bassist, but no where near the virtuosity of Glenn on Bass. Glenn plays bass like a Lead instrument whilst keeping the line.....Mad Dog

Dreams I'll never see...
Did Berry Oakley have a son that's with them, now? He died the same way Duanne did, close to the same time and place - a long time ago. Oteil Burbridge's group is called the Peacemakers, but he could be playing with more than one group at a time?0 -
I, and many others think the key elements were
Blackmore-Lord-Paice, in that order. All the others were more or less replaceable...albeit with varying success. I, personally LOVED Every line up, maybe Mark I (Rod Evans & Nick Simper Least)...Purple Trivia: I believe it was Rod Evans who wanted his "buy-out" ALL up front and Nick Simper was shrewder and perhaps saw Purple would continue...he took royalties and obviously made out MUCH better. In fact, Rod, tried to rehash "HIS" version of Purple when the REAL purple were in their heyday...he was quickly threatened with a lawsuit and fell back in to obscurity. I saw a video recently of the latest "Purple" incarnation: Jon Lord is retired, Steve Morse (Dixie Dregs) has replaced Blackmore, and Ian Gillan's voice IS now gone. From what I saw...I wouldn't want to lose tany olove gor respect for Mark II Purple to bother seeing them. Mad Dog

Believe it or not.......
I never really heard any Hot Tuna. Where can I start? I always stayed away from them (although I love Jack from The Airplane) because all the burnout Dead heads loved them. Mad Dog

Fightin' and drinkin' done me no good...
It's funny you liked Jefferson Airplane, but not the Dead - these groups played many shows together, with the Airplane always headlining ahead of the Dead. Hot Tuna formed from 3 members of the Airplane, and opened for them also - at shows between 1969-1972. Jorma Koukonen and Jack Casady have played together since the late 50's, but Jack first picked up a bass en-route to the offer to join the Airplane (fast learner?). These guys are around 65 now, and are still together as Hot Tuna - doing acoustic/electric/blues/folk/psychedelic shows.
I'll get you some Tuna, through a special delivery. Got some live stuff - "Double Dose", and their first acoustic recording "Hot Tuna" from 1970.0 -
I like the DEAD
some great songs: Casey Jones; Uncle John's band; US Blues...I will get by. I just never got too stoked on the Cult-ish cloud around the dEAD AND ITS FOLLOWERS> Great jamming band. Phil Lesh - excellent bass player. I am big Airplane fan - Much better band in my opin ion. Am I looking foward to Hot Tuna and hope to catch them before the hit the ol folks home. Thanks . Mad Dog0 -
Glenn did a tribute to TOMMY
Peolpe went wild. My wife wqas laughing...what a collection of oddballs at the show...all walks but a large proportion of geeks......non-violent atleast...I would NEVER bring the wife to a Sabbath show. I thought of you Rick and your generous CDs you burned for me...still owe ya. Mad Dog0 -
I always liked the Guild Hollow body bass Cassady Played
Who was the Airplanes original bass player, Murkin? MD0 -
Glad you asked!
The original Jefferson Airplane contained neither Jack Casady or Grace Slick. Bob Harvey played a standup bass for them, before Jack - these were coffee house musicians, mostly folk influence at first. Grace Slick left her husband's band to join the Airplane, at Jack's pursuasion - bringing her songs "White Rabbit" and "Somebody to Love" that put them on the map...
Jack has been playing an Epiphone hollowbody for quite some now - the same signature model is available for around $800, and he takes an occasional sample from the factory to play at shows and perform his personal quality check. These guys are far from the old folks home - Jorma rides a Harley and owns a guitar camp in Ohio where he, Jack, and other famous musicians teach anyone at any level who wants to come. They even have lodging on site, and a concert hall for jams. No drugs or alcohol allowed there, by the way. I don't play any instrument, but have talked with some students who attest to the commitment these guys have toward teaching and preserving the American blues heritage.
Going back to your man Glenn Hughes, it's very refreshing to hear that someone known for the heavier stuff can appreciate the power of the blues, and keep it alive with their shows!
Keep on Truckin'0 -
Yes I did hear about a camp
Great they are keeping it alive...my 7 yr old boy is VERY interested in The Blues. Mad Dog

Mannish boy blues...
So that was the buzz going around the local Chucky Cheezers, about a budding young bluesman "Howlin' Pup Dog" - with his signature "All that Milk, and no Cookies" song?
The guitar (and bass) camp is at:

Hope that's right. Wonder if there is a minimum age limit...0
